As we journey into the winter season in Jackson County, we wish you and your family a peaceful winter filled with the light of love and laughter. Jackson County is home to diverse communities and people who celebrate different holiday traditions. Although the days are getting darker until the Winter Solstice, please know we see your light and appreciate all your contributions to make Jackson County a better place. Let's work together to bring more light into the upcoming New Year.
When day comes we step out of the shade,
aflame and unafraid,
the new dawn blooms as we free it.
For there is always light,
if only we're brave enough to see it.
If only we're brave enough to be it.
~ Amanda Gorman, National Youth Poet Laurete
We need all hands on deck for the upcoming Midterm elections and now is the time for our local party to build up our funds so we can WIN more BLUE seats at every level of government. Please consider making a donation to your Jackson County Democratic party before the end of the year. All of our funds are spent right here in Jackson County to support voter outreach efforts through our top Neighborhood Leader Program, to recruit, train and support Democratic and progressive candidates and to reach out to new voters from our diverse communities throughout our county. If you donate before the end of 2021, your donation may help you earn an Income Tax credit towards your Oregon Income Tax. A huge thanks to all of you who have donated over the course of this past challenging year. If your situation allows, please consider making an additional donation so your local party can start 2022 on strong footing and ready to WIN in 2022. Thank you!

Our first ever Virtual Book Club is starting in January!
Winning in rural areas like Jackson County will be key in next year's Midterm elections as we continue to BUILD BACK BETTER and elect Democratic leaders at the federal, state and local levels. But, how do we craft a message that resonates with rural Oregon voters and how do we elect more Democrats to truly represent our interests on the county commission, in the Oregon legislature and in the US Congress? This winter we'll be laying the groundwork for success in the Midterms with two important events.
Jackson County Democrats are excited to host Jane Kleeb, Chair of the Nebraska Democratic Party and founder of grassroots group Bold Nebraska. Kleeb will be the keynote speaker for the Jackson County Democrats upcoming Roosevelt-Kennedy Dinner on Saturday February 12, 2022.
Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown wrote that Kleeb, in her book Harvest the Vote, sounds the alarm for national Democrats to wake up to rural issues. Kleeb writes about her work, which parallels our Jackson County Democrats issues, including how we need to listen to rural people—their ideas and needs—and so have Democrats win again in rural America. She shows how the vast spaces of rural America can be used for clean energy projects. She looks to the joining of farmers, climate activists and tribal leaders for common ground as they all work against corporate overreach, just as they did when they fought against the Keystone XL Pipeline.
In preparation for Kleeb’s visit, the Jackson County Democrats will host two Virtual Book Club events to discuss her book, Harvest the Vote. The Book Club dates are Thursday, January 6th, 2022 and Thursday, January 20th, 2022, both from 6:30-8:00pm. We have a few of her autographed Harvest the Vote books available for $25. You can arrange to get a copy (in Ashland) from Patt Herdklotz, by calling Patt at 541-261-2964. Make arrangements to get your copy so you can read it over the holidays and plan to join us virtually over ZOOM for a fruitful discussion in January!

Medford residents are invited to attend a virtual community forum hosted by the City of Medford at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 14, 2021, to learn about current issues related to rent burden, fair housing, landlord and tenant relationships, as well as rental assistance opportunities.
The presentation team will include representatives from the City of Medford, Center for Nonprofit Legal Services, and ACCESS. Information will be shared on current housing statistics, tenant protections, and community resources. Feedback from this community discussion will be used to help guide City housing initiatives to address housing challenges, especially those related to rent burden.
Thirty percent of Medford’s renter households are paying more than 50 percent of their income to cover the cost of rent. These households are considered severely rent burdened. Paying too much for housing often prevents households from paying for other necessary expenses, including medical care, food, utilities, education, transportation, child care and more. During this event, community members are encouraged to share experiences, ask questions, and provide input on potential solutions to ease rent burden.
