I wasn't looking to adopt a cat for myself. It was my mother's birthday, and my sister and I had agreed that Mom needed a cat. Yes, she needed the soft warmth of a kitty, but she also needed to be reminded of her fierce independence and inner beauty.

Several years before, our lives had taken an abrupt and traumatic turn. At the time, we thought it was for the worst. My parents got divorced, and my mother remarried a charming man who turned out to be less than charming behind closed doors.
