Inclusion Study - Where Do You Stand?

Ethnic & Gender Diversity in Entertainment

image1

Variety Business Intelligence (VBI), the leader in global entertainment data and analysis, has executed the largest study of its kind on the state of ethnic and gender inclusion across film, TV and digital content in the entertainment industry’s creative community. The study also includes representation data on every writer, producer, director and actor who worked during the report’s timeframe.

While the overall consensus of the study shows there is much work to be done before the entertainment industry has reached appropriate representation around gender and ethnicity there are media companies, networks, agencies and studios who standout from their peers in key metrics and areas.

As the premiere source for the underlying data supporting the findings in this report VBI is perfectly positioned to conduct an inclusion study. The objective of this inaugural study is to foster increased inclusion both in front of and behind the camera by providing accurate data on where the industry stands. The complete report gives studios and networks the tools they need to see their inclusion initiatives in the context of the industry at large.

Findings

One key finding is that across all of the major media players, women are still fighting for equal representation. No major studio came close to fifty percent women either on-camera, behind the camera or combined (see fig. 1, below).

Another takeaway is that by percentage of general population, Hispanics/Latinos have the lowest overall representation both on-screen and behind the camera. The average representation of Hispanic/Latinos, at 5%, was well below the U.S. Census estimate of 18%. (see fig. 2, below).

What Are the Standards for Success in Inclusion?

A challenge of an inaugural study is that no comparisons can be made with prior years’ data. As such, this study measures success by how the entertainment industry’s representation of gender and ethnicities compares to U.S. Census data estimates on the breakdown of ethnicities. Women represent 50.8% of the total U.S. population, but we have used a 50% standard for gender parity.

TV/DIGITAL PROJECT SELECTION:
Primary results are for studios (rather than networks) because in TV the studios own content and the networks license the content. For example, at ABC the majority of their content is produced by ABC Studios, but some of their content may be produced by Warner Bros. TV, 20th Century Fox Television, etc. Providing information at the studio level avoids duplicates in the counts. In some cases the TV studio is an in-house studio for a cable network.

FILM PROJECT SELECTION:
Distributors, rather than studios, were used to avoid duplicates and catch more projects. Many studios have multiple production banners (e.g. Affirm Films and Screen Gems for Sony), but all their films are distributed by the same company, so searching by distributor catches all projects and avoids confusion. Some companies like Sony Pictures Classics or Fox Searchlight might not always be attached as a studio to their films, but are always listed as distributor.
