The International Society of Geriatric Oncology Nursing and Allied Health Interest Group (SIOG NAH), the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology & Aging Special Interest Group (CANO OA SIG), and the European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) have jointly developed a new position statement for hematology-oncology/cancer nursing care for older adults with cancer and their caregivers. WELL-EDUCATED CANCER NURSES AT THE HEART OF SAFE CANCER CARE |
---|
| EONS has published an article in the European Public Health Alliance newsletter regarding the Europe Beating Cancer Plan (EBCP). In it, we point out that cancer nursing education and patient and occupational safety go hand in hand and are critical for achieving better cancer outcomes. It is vital to ensure that all cancer nurses across Europe have access to specialist training in order to address health inequalities within and between Member States. It is also essential to ensure safe care of patients in a safe working environment. EONS welcomes aspects of the EBCP that centre on the importance of education and training of the healthcare workforce and, more specifically, the proposals for the ‘Inter-specialty cancer training programme’ but, these must have cancer nurses at their core if patient care is to keep improving. SAVE THE DATE FOR WORLD DAY FOR SAFETY AND HEALTH AT WORK |
---|
| World Day for Safety and Health at Work is celebrated every year on April 28. This is a global initiative by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and aims to stimulate dialogues on safety and health at work. This year, the ILO will take this opportunity to raise awareness and stimulate dialogue on the importance of creating and investing in resilient Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) systems, drawing on both regional and country examples in mitigating and preventing the Spread of COVID-19 at the workplace now and in the future. In the meantime, negotiations continue on the 4th revision of the Carcinogens and Mutagens at Work Directive (CMD) to eliminate cancer at work. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of protecting those who are on the frontline of our healthcare systems and EONS welcomes the amendments tabled by the CMD4 Shadow Rapporteurs on better protection for pregnant/breastfeeding women, systematic risk assessments by employers, ensuring the availability of personal protective equipment for employees and repeated training programmes for healthcare professionals. |

TOBACCO AND ALCOHOL CONTROL IN EUROPE |
---|
| In Europe, between 30% and 50% of cancer deaths could be prevented by modifying or avoiding key risk factors such as smoking and alcohol consumption and by implementing existing evidence-based prevention strategies. Despite considerable progress made in recent years, the number of smokers in the EU is still high – 26% of the overall population and 29% of young Europeans aged 15-24 smoke. To address this situation, the European Union and national governments have taken various tobacco control measures in the form of legislation, recommendations and information campaigns with the ambition to create a tobacco free generation by 2050. Some of the policy measurements on tobacco control include regulations on branding and advertising, creation of smoke-free environments and tax measures against the trade which seems to be the most effective. In the meantime, World Health Organization highlights links between alcohol and cancer as well. Alcohol is known to be a causal factor in over 60 diseases and conditions, including at least 7 types of cancer (mouth, upper throat, larynx, oesophagus, breast, liver and colorectal cancers). Even moderate alcohol consumption increases the long term risk of certain heart conditions, liver disease and cancers, and frequent consumption of large quantities can lead to dependence. The European Commission proposed introducing mandatory health warnings for alcoholic drinks by the end of 2023, as part of its Beating Cancer plan. For example in France and Lithuania, labels of alcoholic beverages are required to warn consumers about the potential health consequences of alcohol exposed pregnancies, either with a pictogram or with text. Cancer nurses play a pivotal role in cancer prevention and training programmes with a focus on promoting the European Code Against Cancer can equip cancer nurses with the right instruments to support patients in their journey to a healthier lifestyle. |

BALANCING FREE MOVEMENT & SHORTAGES IN HEALTHCARE WORKFORCE |
---|
| European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety in 2014-2019, Vytenis Andriukaitis, has written an article about ‘How can we find a balance between free movement and shortages in the healthcare workforce in the EU?’ to mark World Health Day (WHD) on 7 April. In it, he argues that a commitment to design and implement appropriate policies to train, recruit and retain medical professionals, as well as the persistence to find win-win solutions for all parties involved in the management of health personnel, would be a very appropriate way to mark WHD. THE COST OF LIVING WITH CANCER DURING THE SECOND WAVE OF COVID-19 |
---|
| Heading into the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, care for vulnerable patients with cancer and their families became more important than ever. The COVID-19 pandemic was from the beginning an international health crisis (World Health Organization, 2020), and the risk of getting an infection with COVID-19 may have increased worries and stress and reduced resilience for patience with cancer and their families. A Danish cross-sectoral study with n= 4571 cancer patients in the department of oncology at Odense University Hospital in May 2020 revealed that 80% of patients were at least somewhat concerned about contacting COVID-19. The finding was supported by a recently published quantitative study in which the authors concluded that fears and anxiety related to COVID-19 were high among cancer patients and caregivers. Patients who reported more social problems were older, had less education and were living without minor children. Limited information exists on how European patients perceive the long-term threat of COVID-19 and resulting changes in cancer care and how patients with cancer cope with daily and family life.
