EPHA DEMANDS A NEW DEAL ON MEDICINES

The 4th European Public Health Alliance (EPHA) Universal Access and Affordable Medicines Forum has called for a change in medicines pricing policy. The debate, in Brussels on 14 November, focused on innovative cancer treatments, medicines shortages, transparency and Research and Development. The Forum highlighted the importance of transparency and fair pricing negotiations between national governments and pharmaceutical companies. Current medicine pricing negotiations are largely anonymous, which strengthens the hand of the pharmaceutical companies and contributes to high medicine prices. This in turn leads to national governments sometimes declining expensive yet innovative medicines or avoiding medicine shortages by paying high prices.
