| | As we enter a new year, I’d like to thank you all for being a valued part of EONS in the past year and wish you all a hopeful, prosperous and healthy 2022!
I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to you all for the many achievements that have kept the cancer nursing field moving forward in the last year. You are the driving force of our society and the direct connection to the patients, who motivate us to push forward under all circumstances.
Today, I want to encourage all cancer nurses, EONS individual and society members, our partners and our supporters, to keep up the important work. It is only by working together and maintaining our strong collaboration that we can move forward, upholding EONS goals of supporting cancer nursing across the European continent. This is especially important now, when a global pandemic is making daily realities even more challenging for cancer nurses and their patients, providing and receiving care in overburdened healthcare environments.
This global pandemic is not yet over, but EONS will continue to strive to ensure the cancer nursing community has the tools it needs to go on improving cancer care and tackling the cancer burden in our communities.
EONS will move forward into 2022 with a strong focus on providing support to all its members. In 2022, EONS will again support cancer nurses with great opportunities to learn and develop their careers and to be engaged in high-level cancer nursing events and activities. We are already looking forward to several important happenings: the official launch event of the Cancer Nursing Fund, our Masterclasses and webinars in cancer nursing, European Cancer Nursing Day, EONS15, an update of the Cancer Nursing Index, the development of European College of Cancer Nursing, our ongoing Cancer prevention drive, and more. For full details of how you can be involved and engaged in all these – and for updates on other projects, happenings and opportunities – I kindly invite you to be engaged in EONS social media, read and subscribe to this monthly newsletter and check EONS website regularly.
Facing future challenges and making a difference together
At EONS, we are looking forward to another productive year supporting cancer nurses in an environment of constant change, facing the future challenges in healthcare. Together with our EONS cancer nursing societies, we will make a difference and we will continue our work on communication, advocacy, research and education.
EONS will continue to support upcoming, young and later-career cancer nurses throughout the European continent. We will develop strategies to empower them by providing platforms that afford them the opportunity to make the most of their talents, stimulate personal growth and positively impact their personal, academic and professional lives, as well as the lives of their patients.
It’s been another tough year, but I am confident that EONS can continue to extract any positives and learning opportunities that can come out of this health crisis and build on them, to improve working conditions, the care of our patients and support the caregiver in this new reality.
I look forward to all the future opportunities for cancer nursing and I hope we will welcome you to one of EONS' activities in 2022 – online or in person – because, together we are making a difference.

EARLY BREAST CANCER –
EONS WEBINAR MINI-SERIES |

| | We are pleased to announce EONS will develop a new education programme focused on early breast cancer (EBC). The main aim is to develop an educational initiative for the European cancer nursing community to support those who care for people with EBC. We aim to deliver a mini-series of three webinars to give an overview of the knowledge and skills required to care for people with EBC. The webinars will cover the following topics: pathophysiology genetics EBC surgery overview of neo/adjuvant therapies assessment and management of treatment side effects and symptoms impact of EBC on patients and families; and living well during and after cancer treatment. As one of the greatest barriers to education is language, the webinars will be translated into three languages. They will be available open-access on demand on EONS’ project-dedicated website in autumn 2022. The project will be completed in four phases over a 12-month period (01/2022 – 01/2023).

Updated information regarding rates, plus current registration forms, are now available on the EONS website membership pages Membership of EONS offers nurses outstanding opportunities to update and expand their cancer care knowledge and to exchange information with colleagues across Europe. The professional and personal benefits of being an active member of our vibrant and growing organisation will help you to better meet your every challenge. EONS has lots of exciting plans and events lined up for the coming year and you can keep up to date with all our activities on the EONS website. We look forward to working together in the coming year to promote and support cancer nursing across Europe.

| | When we talk about health and mental illness there is a tendency for people to withdraw. Stigma, fear, prejudice and stereotypes keep people away from talking about mental health, from seeking help, from taking on a health problem. There is no health without mental health. In order to feel good about ourselves and reach our maximum professional and personal potential, we must have a satisfactory level of well-being. This month’s blog looks at ways to talk about and improve mental health, for the cancer nurse and for the patient.

SUPPORTING CANCER NURSES IN CARING FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR PATIENTS |

| | This year’s European Cancer Nursing Day (ECND22) will take place in Zagreb, Croatia, and online, on 18 May. Its theme will be: ‘Supporting cancer nurses in caring for themselves and their patients’. During the pandemic, existing issues related to burnout, stress and resilience have increased, resulting in many leaving the profession. The campaign will focus on the importance of self-care and wellbeing for cancer nurses, on occupational health, and on retention and recruitment – all of which impact on the quality of patient care. We look forward to a powerful campaign that everyone can participate in to help address these important issues in cancer nursing. Stay tuned for more information across all EONS platforms.

MAJOR CAMPAIGN TO IMPROVE
CANCER PREVENTION ACROSS EUROPE |

| | | EONS is in the process of planning a major new campaign around the prevention of cancer. ‘Cancer Prevention Across Europe’ (PrEv-can) has the aim of raising awareness, building capacity, promoting health and addressing health literacy. In collaboration with a large number of organisations, it will empower cancer nurses to use their unique contact with patients and the public to make a real impact. The campaign will tie in with the European Code Against Cancer and its 12 recommended actions to reduce cancer risk. PrEv-can is planned to be launched in September 2022 and run for a year, focussing on a different recommendation every month. Stay tuned for more information across all EONS platforms and to find out how you can take part in this important EONS initiative to help address the burden of cancer in Europe. |

| DIGITAL LAUNCH OF THE CANCER NURSING FUND – REGISTER NOW |

| | The digital launch of the Cancer Nursing Fund (CNF) will take place on 1 February at 11am CET. This prestigious event, entitled ‘Cancer Nursing Fund - Strengthening Cancer Nurses to Improve Patient Care and Recovery’ is organised under the high patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Astrid of Belgium.
The Cancer Nursing Fund (CNF) was established on European Cancer Nursing Day 2020. The CNF is managed by the King Baudouin Foundation. The Fund is a unique opportunity to support the excellent work that cancer nurses do and advance the profession of cancer nursing in Europe. The launch event will feature a range of high profile speakers who will address the key issues facing cancer nursing today and describe how the Fund can help. | EONS15 CANCER NURSING CONFERENCE – THEME ANNOUNCED! |

| | We are delighted to be able to announce the theme of our next EONS Conference, EONS15: ‘Quality cancer care: pathways to clinical excellence in cancer nursing’. This key fixture in the cancer nursing calendar will take place in September 2022 and more details about the specific date and the location will be available soon. The recently formed EONS15 Scientific Committee , who undertake the planning of this important event, have also decided the EONS15 abstract categories:
1. Health promotion, prevention and screening
2. eHealth and digital innovations
3. Supportive care and symptom management
4. Patient and occupational safety
5. Palliative and end-of-life care
6. Professional and educational issues in cancer nursing

ESO-EONS 3rd EASTERN EUROPEAN AND BALKAN MASTERCLASS – WARSAW, POLAND

| | The 3rd ESO-EONS EEBR Masterclass is scheduled to take place as a live event in Warsaw, Poland, from 21-25 May 2022. The call for applications is now open. The masterclass is specifically designed to meet the educational needs of cancer nurses from Eastern Europe and the Balkan region. Three intensive days of full immersion in up-to-date cancer nursing will help participants to improve clinical skills and patient care. Sessions are specifically nursing orientated, exploring specialist practice skills such as assessment and decision-making, communication skills, complex symptom management, research in nursing and psycho-social consequences of cancer therapy. Deadline for applications is 21 February 2022.

CMD4 REACHES POLITICAL AGREEMENT ON PROTECTING WORKERS FROM HAZARDOUS
AND REPROTOXIC SUBSTANCES |

| | EONS is extremely proud to announce that the Protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to carcinogens or mutagens at work Directive (CMD4) reached a political agreement by introducing binding occupational limit values for 11 substances in the annex to the directive and broadened its scope into CMRD with the inclusion of reprotoxic substances. EONS Advocacy Working Group has been working extensively over the last two years to raise awareness about this important topic for the future of patient and occupational safety. EONS Safety Survey and Cancer Nursing Index provided important information on current workplace exposure to hazardous drugs with potential acute health effects and/or chronic effects. In January 2020, EONS organised an event in the European Parliament with the support of the European Cancer Organisation (ECO) and European Society of Oncology Pharmacy (ESOP) calling for cross sectoral cooperation to protect cancer nurses, pharmacists and patients from exposure to hazardous drugs. You can read the EONS Open Letter in collaboration with the European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU) and the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) who joined forces in supporting this call here. This is a huge success not only for EU policy makers but also for healthcare workers handling hazardous medical products (HMPs) which, if fully implemented, will strengthen occupational safety and prevent thousands of cases of adverse health effects and even deaths in Europe. A European cancer nurse commented: “We have to learn on the job. After a few shifts side by side with a colleague, we administer chemo and other cancer drugs, but I have no formal training for this.’’
EONS Senior Board Advisor Lena Sharp said: “With this important EU legislation and its implementation in EU Member States, EONS hopes that such incidents will belong to the past.”

| CANCER NURSING PERSPECTIVE LEADS IN THE EUROPEAN HEALTH PARLIAMENT 7th edition |

| | EONS Policy Officer Eleonora Varntoumian has been elected President of The European Health Parliament 7th edition (EHP7: Recover, Reinvest, Reinvent: Creating a resilient European Health Union). In this role, Eleonora aims take a health-in-all-policies approach with a ‘Think Sustainable, Think Digital and Think Patient’ mind-set. Following her election, Eleonora said: “My priorities will be to improve working conditions for healthcare workers, including cancer nurses, strengthen patients' voices and reduce health inequalities in EU Member States. This is the first time in six years that such a leadership position is held by a patient or nursing advocate which demonstrates the important role cancer nurses have in delivering quality care services across Europe and impacting EU health policy making.”
The EHP7 Strategic Plan starts with three important steps to ensure its success:
1. Mapping of current EHP7 members: To identify the best skill sets represented within this dynamic network of young health professionals 2. Mapping of previous EHP editions: To propose new innovative ideas and to build on the momentum of previous recommendations
3. Mapping of key EU priorities: To close the gaps by improving policies at both national and EU levels in collaboration with EHP partners and stakeholders

| | World Cancer Day (WCD), held every 4 February, is a global initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). This year's World Cancer Day theme, “Close the Care Gap”, is all about raising awareness of the equity gap that affects almost everyone, in high as well as low- and middle-income countries, and is costing lives. By raising worldwide awareness, improving education and catalysing personal, collective and government action, we are all working together to reimagine a world where millions of preventable cancer deaths are saved and access to life-saving cancer treatment and care is equitable for all - no matter who you are or where you live. EONS will be supporting WCD across its social media platforms. Join us!
