| The EONS14 Scientific Committee (SC) chaired by Johan de Munter and Andreas Charalambous has selected this year’s theme, “Cancer nursing: Towards a new era in cancer care”, largely to reflect all the challenges and changes that the past year brought due to the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic. All healthcare professionals, including cancer nurses, had to adapt in their daily practice and, despite the huge strain and difficulty of coping throughout this very challenging time, new ways of patient care, monitoring and follow-up were successfully put in place. With this shift towards the use of new technologies for patient communication and monitoring in mind, one EONS14 session will focus on Digital Innovations in Health (Track 2 at 13:00 hrs). The latest research done by EONS working groups (WG) will be presented in two different sessions: A qualitative study on the patient experience during COVID-19, conducted by the Research WG, will be the focus of a SARS-CoV-2 and Cancer session (Track 3 at 14:40 hrs); while additional data gained from the EONS Cancer Nursing Index will be shared in the Patient and Occupational Safety session (Track 1 at 14:40 hrs). There are also sessions on Palliative and End of Life Care and Patient and Occupational Safety. Another session relates to the new EU Cancer Beating Plan, focusing on health promotion, prevention and screening (Track 2 at 14:40 hrs). We have no doubt you will find the EONS14 programme is packed full of interesting topics that are relevant to your daily practice. Moreover, we hope you will gain new scientific knowledge and bring inspirational improvement ideas to your workplaces. We look forward to e-sharing this fantastic, full-day programme with you on 22 September. Book your place now. Find out more and download the programme |

TEAMWORK – READ THE LATEST YCN BLOG |
---|
| Effective teamwork and group communication are essential for building a successful, compassionate, collaborative and supportive team. In this month’s Young Cancer Nurse blog Nikolina Dodlek looks at ‘Teamworking skills; Communicating Effectively in Groups’. She argues that communication is the foundation of good teamwork. She writes: “It is very common in our society and lifestyle to have taken-for-granted notions of communication. Instead, think about communication as a challenge.” She looks at issues around conflict and resisting the ‘echo-chamber’ effect and suggests creative approaches to getting the best out of your group. Nikolina concludes that “The point is to feel comfortable, supported and appreciated in a team and to always have the freedom to have someone to turn to, to feel that you belong here, that you are developing, contributing, participating. Teaming up in the right sense and going in the right direction. Just to feel comfortable and safe. A team is a reflection of its leadership.” Read the YCN blog |

NEW EU FRAMEWORK FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK |
---|
| On 28 June, the European Commission adopted the EU Strategic Framework on Health and Safety at Work 2021-2027, setting out key actions needed to improve workers' health and safety. More than 200,000 workers still die each year from work-related illnesses: the cost for the EU economy is estimated to be over 3.3% of GDP annually. The new strategic framework takes a tripartite approach involving EU institutions, Member States, social partners and other stakeholders and focuses on three key priorities: anticipating and managing change in the context of green, digital and demographic transitions; improving the prevention of work-related accidents and diseases, and striving towards a Vision Zero approach to work-related deaths; and increasing preparedness to respond to current and future health crises. EONS welcomes the new Framework but, given the severity of this issue, especially for cancer nurses handling cytotoxic drugs, believes that the European Commission should be even more ambitious. We believe the Commission should oblige EU Member States to implement mandatory training programmes for the handling of hazardous medical products by healthcare professionals, and should take a further step with the inclusion of reprotoxic substances in the EU’s Cytotoxic and Mutagen’s Directive (CMD4). |

EUROPE'S BEATING CANCER PLAN: COMMISSION LAUNCHES KNOWLEDGE CENTRE TO FIGHT CANCER |
---|
| Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan (EBCP) was published earlier this year and now, the European Commission has launched the first flagship initiative of the EBCP – the Knowledge Centre on Cancer. This is a new online platform which will gather the latest evidence on cancer, provide healthcare guidelines and quality assurance schemes, as well as monitor and project trends in cancer incidence and mortality across the EU. It is also a space to share best practice, collaborate and coordinate to make the most of collective knowledge and evidence-based science. The Knowledge Centre on Cancer aims to help in the successful implementation of the EBCP initiatives by identifying, aligning, planning and coordinating scientific and technical actions. It is hoped this will lead to better prevention, improved screening for earlier detection and enhanced treatment and care. |

EU4HEALTH 2021-2027 – A VISION FOR A HEALTHIER EUROPEAN UNION |
---|
| During the Covid-19 pandemic, cancer nurses have been working tirelessly in the frontline of our healthcare systems to continue patient treatment under the most difficult of circumstances. EONS welcomes the call in EU4health on an inter-specialty cancer training programme. In the EU4Health Programme, the Commission proposes to invest €9.4 billion in strengthening health systems and making them more resilient. (This is compared to the previous Commission proposal for a health strand under the European Social Fund+ of €413 million.) In order to decrease the impact of non-communicable diseases on individuals and society and to reduce premature mortality by one third by 2030, it is also vital to focus on prevention – something that EONS is addressing with the EONS Cancer Prevention Plan. Cancer nursing training programmes are essential to prevention and to improving patient outcomes. |
