EONS PRESIDENTS WARMLY INVITE YOU TO THE EONS15 CONFERENCE! |
---|
| EONS President Johan de Munter – Welcome to three inspirational days: “The EONS15 conference is a must for all European cancer nurses. It’s about learning and growing your knowledge and skills, but it’s also about being inspired, networking with colleagues from other countries and gaining the confidence to develop your career in exciting new ways. Year after year, we hear from cancer nurses who tell us that attending the conference was a turning point for them, providing a new foundation on which to build the rest of their careers. When I attended my first EONS conference, I never thought that one day I would be EONS President! Trust me, these three inspirational days will change your working life for many years to come –– whether your dream is to be a cancer nurse leader, a specialist in a particular field or simply, and most importantly, to be the best cancer nurse you can be. I greatly look forward to meeting you in Paris for a truly memorable few days together!”
EONS President Elect Virpi Sulosaari looks forward to meeting you: “I remember my first EONS conference – I learnt so much and met so many wonderful people. The educational sessions and symposia are of course very important, but there’s also something really special about meeting colleagues from across Europe and hearing about their day-to-day experiences with people affected by cancer. This is what is so exciting about being able to come together again after Covid-19 – there’s a special magic that you just don’t experience from being online. Those conversations we will have around the conference centre, over coffee, out for dinner in the evening, are pure gold. I still have many professional friends I met at my first conference, and I look forward to meeting new ones this year – I very much hope one of them will be you!” **FILL OUT THIS SIMPLE FORM TO REGISTER FOR EONS15** |

ONCOFERTILITY – READ THE LATEST YCN BLOG |
---|
| In this month’s blog, Sara Jácome, RN, who is an MSc student at Porto CUF Hospital, Portugal, and a member of the EONS-YCN group, looks at the issues that are important to preserving the patient’s quality of life alongside treatment, namely the preservation and protection of fertility. In this blog, she writes: “Effort is required by health professionals, as a team, to try to support do that they need to be spoken about openly…. the cancer nurse, in the first approach to the patient, should be able to talk about this topic and understand what the patient’s expectations are and whether the issue of fertility preservation was addressed by the doctor.” Read the full blog |

EONS IS A PROUD PARTNER IN INTERACT-EUROPE CANCER TRAINING PROJECT |
---|
| On the 27 and 28 June, several members of the EONS team, led by EONS President Johan de Munter, came together with other associations/organisations from all spheres of European cancer care – including surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, oncology nurses, educators and more – to launch INTERACT-EUROPE, an ambitious EU project to promote inter-specialty cancer training. As part of Europe’s new Beating Cancer Plan, EONS is part of a consortium of more than 30 professional associations/organisations and cancer centres from 15 countries who are creating a pioneering curriculum for inter-professional learning and development across borders. INTERACT-EUROPE (also known as Innovative collaboration for Inter-specialty cancer training across Europe), is a project led by the European Cancer Organisation (ECO) and co-funded by the EU4Health programme. The objective is for members of different oncology professions across EU countries to improve their “skills together” through joint training programmes. It is hoped this will enhance common understanding of oncology best practices, and help reduce inequalities in cancer care in Europe. EONS PRESIDENT ELECT AT MAJOR GLOBAL SUMMIT |
---|
| European cancer nurses were represented in the All.Can Global Summit 2022 “Taking Actions: implementing efficiency in cancer care globally“ on 16 June by the EONS President Elect Virpi Sulosaari. The Summit this year highlighted the ground-breaking initiatives to address inefficiencies in cancer. All.Can International has been generating new evidence, with the recent publication of its “Building Efficiency in Cancer Care” blueprint, offering broadly applicable measures to support collaborative policy action for efficient cancer care and to harmonise cancer care efficiency globally. Virpi Sulosaari participated in a panel discussion exploring organisational frameworks, systems and incentives to encourage multidisciplinary care, interdisciplinary coordination and innovative service models. Her emphasis was on ways to support undergraduate education and continuous professional education and training on improving person-centred care, well-being of healthcare professionals and retention of the cancer workforce. Quality cancer care is dependent on many organisational factors, including interprofessional teamwork, a supportive culture, and good leadership to enhance the development of healthy work environments for the oncology workforce. Effective interprofessional teamwork enhances the quality and safety of cancer care provision and health outcomes for people with cancer but is also a significant factor for each individual of the interprofessional care team. Virpi said: “High-quality, person-centered cancer care requires comprehensive education and versatile competencies from the healthcare professionals challenging us to look at the way we structure and implement the curriculums in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. To encourage multidisciplinary care, interdisciplinary coordination and innovative service models, interprofessional collaboration and factors related to healthy working environments should be embedded into curriculums. Collaboration between the education providers and clinical practice is also needed to ensure that education is contemporary and addressing the needs of rapidly changing care environments.” Virpi concluded that enhancing the cancer care workforce’s work environment can be accomplished if the workforce receives recognition, respect and investment by public bodies and politicians. The strong healthcare system can only exist where the facilities and working conditions are met, investments are made in education and creating a healthy working environment and there is increased collaboration among the healthcare professionals in the oncology setting, she explained. EONS TAKES THE TEMPERATURE OF CANCER NURSING ACROSS EUROPE – SURVEY |
---|
| In 2020, EONS collected data on the current status and development of cancer nursing from more than 650 nurses in 42 European countries. The analysed data were presented as the European Cancer Nursing Index 2020©, and described both the overall situation and also important differences between countries. This Index was presented at various meetings and congresses and also used to successfully advocate for better education, safety and recognition for cancer nursing in Europe – find out more here. To measure development and progress, EONS now plan an update, the European Cancer nursing Index 2022©. On International Nurses Day 2022 (May 12), EONS invited cancer nurses across Europe to respond to an online survey, covering similar areas as the previous version of the Index. The survey is available in 16 languages. We hope you will join us in continuing to improve cancer care by taking the survey. Take the surveyhttps://cancernurse.eu/ecni2022/ |

EONS STANDS WITH THE PEOPLE AND ONCOLOGY COMMUNITY OF UKRAINE |
---|
| The European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) is following developments in Ukraine with great sadness. Our mission is to ensure that all people affected by cancer benefit from equal, safe and high quality care. This brutal act of war is endangering all people in Ukraine – including the oncology workforce who, with other healthcare colleagues, are working under unbearable pressure. EONS stands firmly against all forms of violence and is hoping that this appalling situation, and its far-reaching consequences, can be defused for the sake of all innocent parties caught up in it. We encourage people to back European and International organisations in their support of the people of Ukraine. EONS will try its best to find ways to reach out to the oncology workforce and people affected by cancer and help in capacity building where possible. War only brings loss, sadness and inhumane suffering and we truly hope for a peaceful resolution. Our thoughts are with all the people of Ukraine. |

EXCESS WEIGHT LINK TO WOMB CANCER – STUDY |
---|
| Lifelong excess weight almost doubles a woman’s risk of developing womb cancer, according to a Cancer Research UK-funded study published in BMC Medicine. The international study looked at genetic samples from around 120,000 women from Australia, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Sweden, the UK, and the USA, of which around 13,000 had endometrial cancer, the most common type of womb cancer. From these samples, researchers at the University of Bristol, UK, were able to identify hormones that may act as potential causal mechanisms linking excess weight to increased risk of endometrial cancer. |

COMMISSION COMMITS €156 TO REDUCE NCD BURDEN |
---|
| The European Commission is launching an initiative to support member states in reducing the burden of addressing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the EU. The initiative, called Healthier Together, will be funded by €156 million from the 2022 work programme for EU4Health and will cover NCDs such as cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes. According to the Commission, NCDs are responsible for 80% of the total disease burden in the EU and are the leading causes of avoidable premature deaths. “Our ambition is to turn some of the knowledge that we have developed together over the recent years into concrete action to the benefit of our citizens – and to reduce some of the unacceptable health inequalities that we see across our union,” Commissioner for Health Stella Kyriakides said at an event presenting the initiative on 22 June. “One of the plan’s guiding principles is that prevention will always be better than cure,” she added. EONS will be launching a major prevention campaign, PrEv-can, with ESMO and other partners this autumn. Watch this space! Find out more about the EU initiative |
