EONS PRESIDENT VIRPI SULOSAARI – MY VISION FOR CANCER NURSING |
---|
As Virpi begins her two-year term as EONS’ new president, she has shared her vision for the future of cancer nursing, outlining what she believes are the key issues: workforce retention and education, recognition of cancer nursing as a specialised profession, and putting cancer nurses at the heart of every country’s cancer strategy. Virpi says: “I strongly believe that quality cancer care and services can only be realised through the innovation and inspiration of the nursing profession. In EONS, we envisage cancer nurses becoming confident and empowered, operating as actors and leaders in practice, education and research while being able to practice to the full extent of our expertise.”

SURVEY TO DEVELOP DIGITAL TRAINING – PLEASE HELP |
---|
We invite you to participate in a survey for the EU-funded TRANSiTION project, of which EONS is a part. The project aims to provide digital skills training for clinical professionals, non-clinical professionals, patients and their informal carers for cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship, supporting their safe and effective use of existing digital tools, while increasing their readiness and willingness to adopt new ones. The training is expected to improve and re-skill clinical/non-clinical professionals in terms of use of digital solutions and digital readiness, but also to support a faster transition towards more efficient, cost-effective, and patient-centred healthcare models. Your participation is particularly important, as it will provide essential information to guide the training programmes that will be developed. Participate in the survey |

READ THE LATEST YCN BLOG – BREASTFEEDING AND HORMONES IN CANCER |

In this month's blog, Helena McCallig from Ireland advises us that as cancer care nurses it is important to be aware of the facts relating to breastfeeding and breast cancer. Nearly 1 in 8 women will develop some form of breast cancer in their lifetime. Those breastfeeding or pumping may find themselves more aware of their breast health at this point due to the rapid changes that occur while lactating. Read the full YCN blog |

DEVELOPING MULTIDISCIPLINARY CARE IN ALBANIA |
---|
EONS President Virpi Sulosaari has participated in a meeting “Promoting multidisciplinarity in cancer care: the example of breast cancer” in Tirana, Albania, organised by the European School of Oncology (ESO). The event was planned and implemented together with the local oncology specialists to support the local cancer care services to develop a multidisciplinary care (MDC) approach. MDC is accepted as a best practice model of care provision for oncology in many health systems globally, promoting equitable, evidence-based care by a team that combines relevant expertise and enables people with cancer to be involved in decision-making concerning their care. However, in Europe, there are differences among countries in how well the MDC approach is implemented. In a wide-ranging discussion, Virpi pointed out that nurses are the key point of contact between oncologists and people with cancer and therefore are critical for the continuity of care. Local nurses were invited to participate in the session where nurses’ role was discussed. The role of nurses in the MDT and access to continuing specialist education is still in an early stage of development in Albania. Therefore, this event was important for local nurses to bring attention to the expertise of the nursing profession, to enhance their opportunities for professional development and taking up their role in MDC. The event was a successful beginning, and the potential continuation of the collaboration is under discussion. Find out more |

It is EONS’ goal to promote safer and inspiring workplaces for patients and nurses throughout Europe. EONS STANDS WITH THE PEOPLE AND ONCOLOGY COMMUNITY OF UKRAINE |
---|
The European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) is following developments in Ukraine with great sadness. Our mission is to ensure that all people affected by cancer benefit from equal, safe and high-quality care. This brutal act of war is endangering all people in Ukraine – including the oncology workforce who, with other healthcare colleagues, are working under unbearable pressure. EONS stands firmly against all forms of violence and is hoping that this appalling situation, and its far-reaching consequences, can be defused for the sake of all innocent parties caught up in it. We encourage people to back European and International organisations in their support of the people of Ukraine. EONS will try its best to find ways to reach out to the oncology workforce and people affected by cancer and help in capacity building where possible. War only brings loss, sadness and inhumane suffering and we truly hope for a peaceful resolution. Our thoughts are with all the people of Ukraine. |

COVID VACCINE RESEARCH HELPING TREAT CANCER |
---|
Two hospitals in Liverpool, UK, are helping to lead the way in a new field of medicine by way of clinical trials which owe much to the pioneering work carried out during the race to find a Covid vaccine. The cancer vaccine trials use the same mRNA technology as most Covid vaccines and operates on the same principle – training the body to fight and destroy harmful diseases. Dr Sheena Khanduri, medical director at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, said “This technology harnesses defects in the cancer cells and creates personalised vaccines for the individual. It’s hugely exciting and it really represents a paradigm shift in the knowledge we have about how cancer vaccines work.” Clatterbridge, working in partnership with the Royal Liverpool Hospital and the University of Liverpool, is running a number of world-first clinical trials on cancer vaccines. STUDY FINDS DOGS COULD HELP FIND CANCER CURE |
---|
Researchers have discovered dogs and humans share 18 mutation “hotspots” which are the likely cause of cancer. The similarities raise the possibility dogs could be used to test potential cancer-fighting drugs that may work on their tumours as well as on ones affecting humans. The study’s authors from MIT, Harvard and the University of Georgia said: “Canine tumours provide a powerful platform for translational investigation. The results of this study show the incredible potential of combining canine cancer genomics and big data analysis to save lives.” Find out more |
