ECND22 MAKES A MAJOR IMPACT ACROSS EUROPE!
ECND MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN CROATIA – READ THE LATEST YCN BLOG

In the June blog, Nikolina Dodlek of the Croatian Oncology Nursing Society describes welcoming EONS to their capital city, Zagreb, for ECND22. She says: “As a relatively ‘young’ oncology nursing society, we have for some time been discussing and planning ways of improving specialised education in Croatia for oncology nurses, organising different events, educational opportunities and advocating for a curriculum for oncology nurses. A great effort, time and much passion were put into meetings during the event organisation.” A Roundtable Discussion was held with the Croatian government on the theme: “Challenges in Cancer Care and Cancer Nursing during and beyond the pandemic” and real progress was made to achieving shared goals.

‘SUPPORTING CANCER NURSES IN CARING FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR PATIENTS’

The ECND22 campaign focused on the importance of self-care and wellbeing for cancer nurses, on occupational health and on retention and recruitment – all of which impact the quality of patient care. A powerful social media campaign on European Cancer Nursing Day on 18 May (#ECND22Go4SelfCare) saw cancer nurses everywhere participate by reposting and sharing important key messages pictures and videos.
EC Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides, honoured ECND22 with a special video message in support of the work of cancer nurses throughout Europe. In a personal thank you for the outstanding commitment, sacrifice and ‘nothing short of heroic efforts’ of cancer nurses, especially during the extra burden of Covid-19, she said: “It is only right that you are putting your own well-being under the spotlight today and I am delighted to be part of that! To look after your patients, you must first look after yourselves.”
The EONS Board and Working Groups met in Zagreb, Croatia, to mark the day and make plans for EONS’ future work – you can find out more and view a selection of videos at the link below.

ECND22 COMPETITION – AND THE WINNER IS…

Congratulations to the oncology nurses working at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois (CHUV) in Lausanne, Switzerland, who made a video about an outpatient oncology nurse that enters her notes at the end of a tough day. As she sits down, fatigue takes over her body and her mind wanders off for a moment … “How much would I enjoy a refreshing lemonade by the lake… or a trip, somewhere far… or some yoga to relieve some tension… or a day in the beauty salon ….” This humorous video shows the importance of taking care of oneself set against the background of an oncology nurse’s daily life. To shoot the video, different units of the oncology department at CHUV participated. The team cohesion allowed the production of this video and was a great opportunity to deepen inter-service links. The makers of the video said: “In the end, this video was also a way to take care of ourselves thanks to a fun shared moment among the team, as well as a way to make our colleagues feel valued and recognized…. It is for all oncology nurses: do not just think about it, take the time to care for yourself and you will take better care of the others.”
The prize is free entry to EONS15 in Paris this September.

EONS TAKES THE TEMPERATURE OF CANCER NURSING ACROSS EUROPE

In 2020, EONS collected data on the current status and development of cancer nursing from more than 650 nurses in 42 European countries. The analysed data were presented as the European Cancer Nursing Index 2020©, and described both the overall situation and also important differences between countries. This Index was presented at various meetings and congresses and also used to successfully advocate for better education, safety and recognition for cancer nursing in Europe – find out more here.
To measure development and progress, EONS now plan an update, the European Cancer nursing Index 2022©. On International Nurses Day 2022 (May 12), EONS invited cancer nurses across Europe to respond to an online survey, covering similar areas as the previous version of the Index. The survey is available in 16 languages. We hope you will join us in continuing to improve cancer care by taking the survey.

EONS STANDS WITH THE PEOPLE AND ONCOLOGY COMMUNITY OF UKRAINE

The European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) is following developments in Ukraine with great sadness. Our mission is to ensure that all people affected by cancer benefit from equal, safe and high quality care. This brutal act of war is endangering all people in Ukraine – including the oncology workforce who, with other healthcare colleagues, are working under unbearable pressure. EONS stands firmly against all forms of violence and is hoping that this appalling situation, and its far-reaching consequences, can be defused for the sake of all innocent parties caught up in it. We encourage people to back European and International organisations in their support of the people of Ukraine. EONS will try its best to find ways to reach out to the oncology workforce and people affected by cancer and help in capacity building where possible. War only brings loss, sadness and inhumane suffering and we truly hope for a peaceful resolution. Our thoughts are with all the people of Ukraine.

KETO MOLECULE OFFERS CLUE FOR PREVENTING COLORECTAL CANCER

In a new study, researchers have found evidence that a compound produced while eating a ketogenic diet—that is, a diet very high in fat and low in carbohydrates—could inhibit the development of colorectal cancer. The compound, called β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), jump-started a signalling pathway in epithelial cells in the colon that instructed them to stop dividing.

The International Brain Tumour Alliance’s podcast, “A Brain Tumour and Me”, features inspirational, moving and personal stories from the international brain tumour community and hears from some of those working in the field of neuro-oncology, the people who support patients and their families and those who’ve been told they have a brain tumour. Listeners learn how brain tumours affected all of these people, often in unexpected ways. In this latest episode of the podcast features Denise Bebenek, who lives in Toronto, Canada. How can a mother ever fully come to terms with the loss of their child? This is something which Denise faced when she and her family were given the devastating news that her four-year-old daughter Meagan had an inoperable brain tumour.

A MAGAZINE WITH A DEEP FOCUS ON KEY ISSUES

Cancerworld is a print and online magazine and website for oncologists and other cancer professionals, policy makers and patient advocates. It flags up science that is changing the approach to diagnosis, treatment or care in fundamental ways and offers multiprofessional education on aspects of treatment and care that are important to patients but often poorly covered by other training providers. To mark ECND22 the magazine published an article by EONS President Johan de Munter about the importance of self-care and wellbeing for cancer nurses.
