| | Last month, EONS held its hugely successful annual conference, EONS14 – Cancer Nursing: Towards a New Era in Cancer Care. You can read about some of the highlights in this edition of the newsletter and also on the EONS website. | EONS14 CANCER NURSING CONFERENCE – LEARNING AND INSPIRATION |

| | EONS14 took place on 22 September 2021 and was attended by hundreds of cancer nurses across Europe. The virtual conference presented the latest advances in cancer nursing practice and research in a range of educational sessions and symposia. It ran alongside the ESMO2021 Congress offering participants a rich agenda for learning from across the entire cancer care spectrum. Here are some highlights: |

| | The conference opened with an address by European Commissioner for Health Stella Kyriakides, entitled ‘From theory to implementation: the EU Beating Cancer Plan in motion’. She paid tribute to the work that cancer nurses do, especially acknowledging their dedication and hard work during the Covid-19 pandemic, and emphasised the central role that cancer nursing plays at the heart of cancer care.

‘Vision for Cancer Nursing’ |

| | In his concluding speech, EONS President Johan de Munter pointed the way forward:
“Innovative education and training, continuing education programmes, occupational safety measures, leadership programmes, resilience training and burnout prevention interventions, and increased recognition of the cancer nursing workforce across Europe, are documented solutions to building a sustainable future and secure the cancer nursing workforce.”
However, Johan also pointed out that many challenges and obstacles remain. How can we overcome these together?

‘The power of working together’ –
An EONS14 participant’s view |

| | Valentina Biagioli received a grant funded by the Cancer Nursing Fund to attend the EONS14 conference. Afterwards she commented: “EONS14 gave me a sense of connection with colleagues and friends around Europe. Everyone has distinctive qualities, so I feel like I am part of a large family where young cancer nurses can learn from seniors and grow professionally. It gave me the perspective of what is relevant in other countries, with differences and many commonalities, clarifying the unmet needs for nursing care as the focus of research priorities. It gave me the oxygen I need to look well beyond the problems and difficulties of everyday professional life. It gave me the sense of the power of working together to reduce the cancer burden across Europe.”

EONS CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

| | The European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) is looking for a new Chief Operating Officer (COO). EONS asbl is a pan-European, Brussels-based not-for-profit membership organisation with a current membership of almost 28,000 cancer nurses from all over Europe, the largest group of healthcare workers in the oncology workforce. EONS is also a founder and key contributor to the Cancer Nursing Fund, a charitable foundation set up under the auspices of the King Baudouin Foundation in Brussels. The COO will support European cancer nurses and the cancer nursing community in fulfilling their roles in cancer care and advancing cancer nursing across Europe through its 4 Pillars: Communication, Advocacy, Research, and Education.
The COO oversees the implementation of EONS’ strategic priorities and ensures the continued relevance to the membership of existing activities. The COO leads the Brussels-based asbl, with a staff of 6, and is responsible to an internationally assembled Board and reporting directly to the President of EONS.
We are looking for a person who has a success-focused mind-set, can manage conflicting demands effectively, has a strong sense of integrity, a positive attitude, is mission-driven, and self-directed, but also has people-centred leadership qualities. We expect the COO to have previous membership organisation experience, working with nurses in health care organizations and/or societies and preferably coming from a (cancer) nursing background.

EUROPEAN COLLEGE OF CANCER NURSING – COMING SOON!

| | Earlier this year, EONS set up a European College of Cancer Nursing (ECCN) Task Group (TG) to develop and implement a college for all nurses across Europe caring for people living with and beyond cancer. The ECCN TG is led by the Education Working Group but consists of members from across all of the EONS Working Groups. This is a key component of the college as the pathways will be developed utilising the resources/workshops/modules created independently by the EONS Working Groups.
The ECCN will offer exciting and innovative structured nursing educational pathways which span from early nursing careers through to advanced nursing roles where strong leadership, management, and research within practice is required.
The website will be launched in 2022, with our first cohort of nurses participating in the first part of the professional pathway. This pathway will be for early career nurses who are seeking to develop professionally within cancer nursing.
Part of the ECCN’s role will be to offer mentorship to enable nurses to feel supported and empowered to make a difference to the care of patients with cancer and their families.If you require any further information, please contact projectadmin@cancernurse.eu |

EONS RESEARCH WORKING GROUP (RWG) SEEKS NEW MEMBER

| | The RWG is looking for someone who is actively engaged in research related to cancer nursing practice and who has the time, enthusiasm, and commitment to help EONS develop research and its impact across Europe. Research WG members are expected to: - Actively engage in Task Groups, teleconferences, two face-to-face meetings per year
- Promote EONS and EONS’ work locally, nationally, and internationally
- Peer review and provide constructive feedback on (grant) applications
- Contribute to writing position statements, abstracts and scientific papers
- Contribute to workshops and other educational events
- Contribute to update the Working Group webpages.

| TAKE PART IN THE ABC4NURSES DELPHI STUDY |

| | The ABC4Nurses Project group are conducting a Delphi study to identify the topics that cancer nurses should be educated about in order to provide high-quality care to people living with advanced breast cancer. People living with advanced breast cancer experience significant physical and psychological symptoms, requiring specialist cancer nursing care. In partnership with people affected by advanced breast cancer, this study aims to obtain consensus on the topics and content of an online education programme for cancer nurses about advanced breast cancer. We would like to hear from: - People who have had a diagnosis of advanced or metastatic breast cancer
- Health professionals with experience looking after people living with advanced or metastatic breast cancer
- Researchers with experience in the field of advanced or metastatic breast cancer
- Advocacy professionals with experience in advanced or metastatic breast cancer
- Families and Caregivers of people who have had a diagnosis of advanced or metastatic breast cancer.

| 2ND ESO-EONS EASTERN EUROPEAN AND BALKAN MASTERCLASS |

| | The 2nd Eastern European and Balkan Masterclass in cancer nursing took place in Belgrade, Serbia, from 1-3 September, 2021. The masterclass is specifically designed to meet the educational needs of cancer nurses from this region and in total, 27 nurses from eight eastern European countries attended this collaboration between European School of Oncology (ESO) and EONS. The 3-day programme, based on EONS Cancer Nursing Education Framework, included sessions focusing on recent developments in cancer treatment (immunotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted drugs and chemotherapy) as well as psychosocial support, safety and team communication, cancer prevention and lifestyle issues. It also covered topics related to professional development, such as different cancer nursing roles, clinical leadership and working conditions. In addition, patient cases and clinical dilemmas were discussed. It was clear that the pandemic has had a massive impact on all the participants and their work. Experiences and strategies were shared. On-site translations (English/Serbian) were available during the whole event. The 2nd Eastern European Masterclass Nursing Faculty comprised Lena Sharp, Helena Ullgren and Matthew Fowler. The Masterclass was well-evaluated and it is clear that these events are important, as many of the attending nurses report few other learning opportunities. There is a plan to arrange the next Eastern European Masterclass as a joint event with both nurses and medics.

| | EONS is working on a project that aims to identify core patient-reported outcomes and measures for patients with advanced liver or renal cancer who are treated with targeted therapies. More information can be found on the EONS website.
As part of the project, we are launching a Delphi study to ask clinicians, patients and family/carers to indicate what patient-reported outcomes should be a priority when looking after patients with advanced liver or renal cancer. | EU STATES DISCUSS CANCER POLICY
AND COVID EFFECTS |

| | On 15 July, BECA Rapporteur Véronique Trillet-Lenoir presented her draft report entitled "Strengthening Europe in the fight against cancer – towards a comprehensive and coordinated strategy" to the Members of the Beating Cancer Committee. The European Union remains ambitious to conquer the cancer burden and tackle health inequalities in EU Member States and this report proposes concrete actions and tools with a focus on primary cancer prevention such as tobacco and alcohol control, healthy lifestyle and physical activity and insists on the implementation of gender-neutral HPV vaccination programmes. The report highlights that the revision of the European Code Against Cancer is the best way to inform citizens on how to reduce risk factors for cancer. EONS Cancer Prevention Plan which will be launched on May 2022 includes several activities with the aim of raising awareness, building capacity, promoting health and addressing health literacy aimed at the general public, people affected by cancer and healthcare professionals. |

| | The European Commission launched five new EU missions to bring concrete solutions to some of our greatest challenges today: adapting to climate change, protecting the ocean, seas and waters, living in greener cities and ensuring healthy soil and food. This is a new way to work under Horizon Europe and an original concept in EU policy, which will involve different instruments, business models and public and private investments at EU, national, regional and local levels with an estimated initial funding to missions of up to €1.9 billion until 2023. Cancer remains a key priority in the EU and EONS strongly supports Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan objective to build a stronger multidisciplinary cancer workforce. Patients deserve the best care possible and cancer nurses across Europe need support to ensure they can receive training and keep updating their skills throughout their professional lives. |

| | On behalf of the Patient Support Working Group, the Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL), has now published the 2nd edition of the ECL Rehabilitation Atlas. This is an inventory of 61 different rehabilitation programmes, ordered by category of activity, which were reported by cancer leagues within the ECL membership via a survey conducted in 2019-20. Without claiming to be exhaustive, this Atlas intends to provide basic information about recent programmes and activities supporting the physical and psycho-social rehabilitation of patients and caregivers, which may inspire other cancer leagues, healthcare professionals and stakeholders. |
