Amanda Drury, EONS Board member and Scientific Committee Co-Chair, has helped put together our packed programme featuring top speakers from the world of cancer nursing. Amanda looks forward to welcoming you. She says: “Join us to explore updates on EONS flagship projects, including PrEvCan, the EONS' Cancer Nursing Research Priorities Project, the EONS Advocacy Toolkit, ABC4Nurses, PROMS and the European College of Cancer Nursing.
“Attend our exciting range of presentations on topics such as health promotion, prevention, and cancer screening; supportive care in cancer; symptom management; palliative and end-of-life care; person-centred care; as well as professional and educational issues for nursing. “We also have a range of free sponsored educational sessions and collaborative sessions which will explore the role of cancer nurses in care of patients with emerging treatment modalities.
“For early career researchers, we will host an informative and practical workshop writing for publication in partnership with the European Journal of Oncology Nursing.” Plus, all those great networking opportunities and a chance to socialise and share with other cancer nurses in one of the world’s greatest cities. ESO-EONS MASTERCLASS BOOSTS PATIENT CARE |

The 14th ESO-EONS Masterclass in Oncology Nursing took place in Varese, Italy, from October 6-10 and was another huge success. European advanced cancer nurses participated in the multi professional joint event run by EONS and ESO (European School of Oncology). Four intensive days of full immersion in up-to-date oncology took place in a collective spirit of teaching and learning to improve clinical skills and patient care. The specific nursing-oriented sessions explored specialist practice skills such as assessment and decision making, communication skills, complex symptom management, research in nursing, psychosocial consequences of cancer therapy, and more. Other sessions provided a forum for reviewing and understanding the growing evidence base for nursing interventions and reflect on participants’ role in clinical leadership. Case studies were presented by the participants and explored nursing practice focusing on special aspects of care. Joint sessions with physicians highlighted and supported the growing need for multiprofessionality in chosen topics. Practical training was offered in smaller group sessions.

In this month's blog, Selma Islamčevićfrom Croatia explains how in current practice, childhood cancer treatments are highly successful and more than three quarters of children survive. But there is, crucially, variation between different types of cancer. Cancer treatment is long and unpredictable. It is characterised by the absence from home, school or preschool, separation from family, friends and pets, changes in physical appearance, daily routine and multiple side effects of the treatment. It is also a huge emotional rollercoaster – for a child and for the family.

Join the EONS Advocacy Working Group! Are you passionate about advocacy? The EONS Advocacy Working Group is looking for four new members to help shape the future of cancer nursing across Europe. Here’s what you need to know: Mission: Advance cancer nursing’s role in comprehensive care, professional development, and policy-making across Europe. Duties: Provide advice on advocacy efforts, engage with policymakers, and raise awareness of current cancer care issues. Time Commitment: Anticipate 2-3 hours per month. Eligibility: EONS member or part of a national cancer nursing society, aged under 35, ideally from France, Germany, Balkans, or Eastern Europe. ESO-EONS CLINICAL FELLOWSHIP FOR CANCER NURSES 2024 – APPLY NOW! |

|
This fellowship programme is a collaboration between EONS and the European School of Oncology (ESO). The aim is to encourage the reduction of variability in outcomes of cancer care between countries, as well as within regions in each country, by giving cancer professionals the chance to experience working in multiprofessional teams in accredited centres in Europe. The nurses’ clinical training centres programme will offer cancer nurses the opportunity to spend a period in a clinical setting specially designed to increase knowledge, improve professional development and to encourage mobility within EU and different countries. At the end of the training period at the host centre, it is anticipated that candidates, as well as having improved their skills and knowledge in cancer nursing, will be given a good overview of all the issues involved in the running of a successful Cancer Unit. ESO will refund the cancer nurse with relevant travel costs and a grant of 2000 Euros for each 4-week period. Accommodation is not provided and is to be arranged by the applicant.

EARLY BREAST CANCER WEBINARS – IN TWO MORE LANGUAGES |

The EONS webinar mini-series to support care of people with early breast cancer (EBC) is now available in two further languages – Italian and Polish. This mini-series provided an up-to-date, evidence-based overview of the knowledge and skills required to care for people with EBC. In particular, it covered breast cancer as a disease, pathophysiology, treatment and side effects management, including emerging situations. The last section discusses the impact of EBC on people and their families and how to live well during and after treatment. The webinars – and two patient testimony videos – are all translated into Georgian, German, Italian, Polish, Spanish and Turkish. NEW BOOK SHINES LIGHT ON ROLE OF CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALIST |
|

|
This new book provides a fresh and insightful perspective on the historical and evolving dynamic role of the Clinical Nurse Specialist in Cancer Care. The book is edited by Dr Helen Kerr, Senior Lecturer at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Queen’s University Belfast, who has a clinical background in oncology nursing. The Foreword is by EONS Past-President Johan de Munter, who highlights the necessity of this book in identifying how the Clinical Nurse Specialist contributes to improvements in person-centred care. The book has been written by Clinical Nurse Specialists for Clinical Nurse Specialists and has sixteen chapters written by 22 authors. Authors are Clinical Nurse Specialists, academics with a clinical background in cancer services, an individual with a cancer diagnosis and the carer of an individual who had cancer. Find out more |

EONS STANDS WITH THE PEOPLE AND ONCOLOGY COMMUNITY OF UKRAINE |

The European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) is following developments in Ukraine with great sadness. Our mission is to ensure that all people affected by cancer benefit from equal, safe and high quality care. This brutal act of war is endangering all people in Ukraine – including the oncology workforce who, with other healthcare colleagues, are working under unbearable pressure. EONS stands firmly against all forms of violence and is hoping that this appalling situation, and its far-reaching consequences, can be defused for the sake of all innocent parties caught up in it. We encourage people to back European and International organisations in their support of the people of Ukraine. EONS will try its best to find ways to reach out to the oncology workforce and people affected by cancer and help in capacity building where possible. War only brings loss, sadness and inhumane suffering and we truly hope for a peaceful resolution. Our thoughts are with all the people of Ukraine. |

Safe Handling of Hazardous Drugs (SHHD) is a free educational hub for healthcare professionals who work with hazardous medicinal products (HMPs). Healthcare professionals working in the field can utilise the hub to gain a deeper understanding of engineering controls, surface contamination monitoring, guidelines and directives to help minimise hazardous drug exposure, thereby increasing yours and your patient's protection. The SHHD website hosts a range of resources including editorials, infographics, factsheets, and videos from experts in the field including doctors, nurses, and pharmacists.
