Somalia’s Covid crisis and the role of religious leaders

In Somalia, prominent religious leaders are engaging in widespread campaigns to inform Somalis about measures to prevent the further spread of the pandemic. The government, having low levels of legitimacy, has been cooperating with clerics to counter Al-Shabab’s spread of false information on Covid. Amid international organization’s struggle to operate in Somalia and the rapid increase of US-airstrikes on Al-Shabab occupied territories, the clerics’ campaign is meaningful in reaching vulnerable populations - as acknowledged by the United Nations in several instances. How effective are these messages in view of the mass displacement and lack of humanitarian resources? Will the cooperation with the government have negative consequences for the clerics?

Hisbollah im Nahen Osten

Die USA, Israel, Deutschland und andere Länder stufen die schiitische Organisation Hisbollah als Terrororganisation ein. Nun hat die deutsche Bundesregierung der  Hisbollah ein Betätigungsverbot in Deutschland verhängt. Der Einfluss der Hisbollah ist besonders stark im Libanon, wo sie unter anderem vom Cannabisanbau im fruchtbaren Beekaa-Tal profitiert. Mitten in der Finanzkrise legalisierte Libanon im April 2020 als erstes arabisches Land den Anbau von Cannabis für medizinische Zwecke, in der Hoffnung mit den Einnahmen den Staatshaushalt zu retten. Die regierungsbildende, konservativ-religiöse Hisbollah stemmt sich gegen das neue Gesetz und könnte die Implementierung verhindern. Wie wird sich der Einfluss der Hisbollah im Nahen Osten weiterentwickeln?

Quel avenir pour l’alliance militaire avec les US ?

La multiplication des agressions russes ces dernières années a conduit à une élargissement de l’OTAN. Par conséquent, la présence de l’armée américaine en Europe a connu un nouveau regain. Récemment, d’anciens missiles américains sur des bases allemandes ont ravivé les questionnements sur cette présence, nourrissant la discorde entre les demandes de retrait et un gouvernement justifiant leur nécessité. Au contraire, dans les pays baltiques, membres de l’OTAN, la présence de l'armée américaine est sollicitée et l’opération « Defender Europe 20 » était vivement attendue. Pourtant, comment imaginer sur le long terme, et dans le cadre de leur engagement avec l’OTAN, la présence militaire étasunienne en Europe ?
