First Trade Complaint against Mexico under the USMCA

The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), signed under the Trump administration, got approved by the democrats in congress by including a more effective labor law. The treaty stipulates that employees have to receive fair wages and benefits and moreover, choose their union representation freely and democratically. Now, the US has filed its first lawsuit with the new ‘rapid response’ mechanism under the USMCA against Mexico, alleging that ballot boxes in northern Mexico were destroyed in the General Motors election and workers in the Tridonex auto parts factories had been harassed and fired for their efforts to organize with an independent union. Mexico has since ordered GM to repeat the voting.

Kritik an neuem Abkommen der EU mit afrikanischen, karibischen und pazifischen Staaten

Ein neues Grundsatzabkommen zwischen der Europäischen Union und den Staaten Subsahara-Afrikas, der Karibik und des Pazifiks (AKP-Länder) von April diesen Jahres wird bereits kritisiert. Einerseits schaffe das Abkommen künstliche Gemeinsamkeiten zwischen Kontinentalafrika und kleinen karibischen und südpazifischen Inselstaaten. Andererseits ist die Bedeutung des Abkommens für das innerafrikanische Freihandelsabkommen AfCFTA unklar. Während das AfCFTA Freihandel auf dem gesamten Kontinent ermöglichen soll, regelt das neue Abkommen mit der EU lediglich die Rahmenbedingungen für den Handel zwischen der EU und Subsahara-Afrika. Dies könnte unter anderem zu Handelsbarrieren zwischen Staaten in Nord- und Subsahara-Afrika führen. Von einer verpassten Chance sprechen daher Beobachter, die sich einen Kontinent-zu-Kontinent-Vertrag gewünscht hätten.

Les mercenaires étrangers restent en Afrique du Nord

Bien que la situation en Libye se stabilise, la question des combattants étrangers demeure prépondérante. Malgré de récents pourparlers de paix, la présence de mercenaires demeurant sur le territoire libyen ou se dirigeant vers d’autres pays de la région inquiète. En effet, avec la récente mort du président tchadien Idriss Déby Itno suite à des affrontements impliquant des mercenaires tchadiens venus de Libye, l’implication de mercenaires étrangers pourrait aggraver l’instabilité de la région du Sahel. Le Kenya a d’ailleurs demandé une extension de la mission de l’ONU au Sud de la Libye pour contrôler la frontière et le passage de combattants. Alors que Tripoli est confiant dans le retrait des mercenaires, le problème global des combattants étrangers n’est pas prêt d’être résolu.

18 May: The reality of Uyghurs in China: an international matter

The Uyghur are a turkic population mainly living in China. Mainly muslim, they are persecuted for their faith in what several countries call a Genocide, or the biggest crime against Humanity of the 21st century : imprisonment in camps, rape, sterilization, forced labour, organ trafficking by killing them are just a few of the daily atrocities they experience. llham Tohti, economist, was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2014 on separatism-related charges. Human Rights Watch denounced a “masquerade of justice”. Since then, it is estimated that 1 million Uyhgur people have been forcibly detained in camps : NGOs would call them Concentration or Labor camps, the Chinese Authorities call them Reeducation camps. More than 80 major multinational brands exploit Uyghur forced labor, and the products are exported worldwide : in Geneva, Nike, Apple, Zara, Bershka are just a few brands selling products coming from these camps. The Chinese authorities deny everything.

What is happening in China ? Why is it happening ? What is the reaction from the Swiss Authorities?
