ESSENCE: Held annually in New Orleans’ broiling July, the Essence Festival of Culture is famed for, among other things, fashion and heat. On opening day, there was plenty of both. Meantime, one of the festival speakers, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellin, lunched on a shrimp po-boy at Domilise’s (photo evidence). HEAT: How hot is it? Well, Interstate 10 buckled, forcing a brief traffic shutdown, and one part of southeast Louisiana recorded a feels-like temperature of 124 degrees. VETOES: Gov. John Bel Edwards made good Friday on his vow to veto three politically charged bills targeting LGBTQ+ people, raising the odds that the Louisiana Legislature will return to Baton Rouge in the coming weeks to try to overturn those vetoes.
