TOURISM AUSTRALIA UPDATE

This week the Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) is hosting Meeting Place in Cairns, and with international arrivals already back to 53 per cent of pre-pandemic levels, there have been lots of discussions about what we can all do to keep driving tourism recovery. Today I hosted a panel session with some of our Regional General Managers. We spoke about what they are seeing in their respective markets and they shared insights from their key distribution partners about Australia as a global tourism destination.

Tourism award celebrations continue with New South Wales industry honoured last Thursday at the iconic Luna Park in Sydney/Warrane. Congratulations to the finalists and winners.

Our final Industry Webinar for 2022 will be held on Friday 9 December at 11am AEDT. We will be joined on the webinar by the Chief Executive Officer of Ecotourism Australia, Elissa Keenan to talk about our new partnership. I will also be talking to Andrew Hogg, our Executive General Manager, Aviation and Eastern Markets to hear an update on China and aviation, and Eva Seller our Regional General Manager for Continental Europe, to talk about some emerging opportunities in her part of the world. New research maps the future traveller
Tourism Australia has launched its most comprehensive map of global demand to date in the Future of Demand report and factsheets. The research examined 143 individual experiences across 20 markets and four target audiences and deep dived into three interest areas: Indigenous Tourism, Sustainable, and Accessible Tourism. The collateral can be downloaded by industry and operators at Tourism Australia's corporate website here.

Business Events Planners experience Melbourne
Last week, Tourism Australia hosted senior business events planners from India and New Zealand on a famil to Melbourne/Narrm. Hosted in partnership with Melbourne Convention Bureau, the famil provided planners with the opportunity to experience some of Melbourne’s unique business events offerings, including attending the ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup Final, one the city’s major events. In the post event survey, planners indicated they were 100 per cent more likely to pitch an incentive or corporate meeting to Australia as a result of attending the famil.
Our Country digital experience now open in Sydney
The Australian Geographic Our Country Immersive Experience is now showing at Sydney/Warrane's International Convention Centre (ICC) until early February 2023 and will tour internationally in the coming years. Tourism Australia is the global presenting partner for Our Country, and some of the Sydney team attended the Gala launch event last week. Large format screens and a stirring natural soundscape takes the audience into the beating heart of Australia’s vast wilderness, from rainforests, oceans and gorges, to shooting stars and the desert outback. New ‘Come and Say G’day’ training course on the Aussie Specialist Course
In line with the roll out of Tourism Australia’s new global marketing campaign, Come and Say G’Day, Tourism Australia has created a new training course on the Aussie Specialist Program. Come and Say G’day introduces Brand Ambassador Ruby, a CGI-animated souvenir kangaroo, to the world, and in the training course Aussie Specialists get to meet Ruby and learn more about her adventure around Australia. The new Come and Say G’Day course has had over 1,100 completions in only a month and highlights the natural beauty of Australia’s landscapes and wildlife, modern cities, food and drink offering and Indigenous culture.
North American travel industry honours Aussie Specialist Program with Magellan Award
Tourism Australia has been awarded the Gold Magellan Award 2022 for Overall Education Program by a Travel Destination. This is the second year in a row the Aussie Specialist Program has been recognised with this honour. The Magellan Awards are overseen by a panel of top travel professionals from the industry and presented by North American media company Travel Weekly. Tourism Australia will be featured in an upcoming issue of Travel Weekly.
Australia Marketplace United Kingdom (UK) and Europe
Tourism Australia’s Australia Marketplace UK and Europe returned to London as an in-person event for the first time since 2019 last week, bringing together more than 200 Australian tourism operators and buyers from across the UK and Europe. Australia Marketplace was held at the newly opened Convene, located in the second tallest building in London, on 14 and 15 November, with over 5,340 appointments taking place over the two days. The event also provided attendees with an update on Australia’s tourism recovery and projections for future trends, and a welcome reception sponsored by Tourism Northern Territory and Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia.
Indian cricket team bonds on Rottnest Island
Tourism Australia recently welcomed the Indian cricket team on Rottnest Island. The team took part in team building activities, as they prepared for the ICC T20 World Cup. The activities were promoted on the Board of Control of Cricket in India’s (BCCI) official social media handles and were later picked by various media across India. The star players shared their personal experiences whilst on Rottnest Island. The social media posts resulted in over 1 billion impressions and delivered an earned media value in excess of A$40M, in just three days. View what the team got up to here.
Australia's sustainable experiences highlighted at Los Angeles media screening of Down to Earth: Down Under
A private screening of the series Down to Earth with Zac Efron: Down Under was held for over 50 guests, including US media and content creators from the travel and sustainability space on 14 November. Immediately following the screening, which was held at the Netflix offices in Hollywood, there was a Q&A session with co-star Darin Olien and producer Michael Simkin, and moderated by Chris Allison, Tourism Australia's Vice President of North America. There was a positive reception to the series, with attendees inquiring about the cast's experiences in Australia. This season of the Netflix series was set entirely in Australia and features tourism operators leading the way in sustainability and conservation.
Exhibitor Applications close soon for ATE23 Media Program
Exhibitor applications will close next Friday 2 December for the Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE23) Media Program. The ATE23 Media Program will be held on the Gold Coast by Tourism Australia in partnership with Tourism and Events Queensland and supported by Destination Gold Coast from 28 April to 1 May 2023, bringing together key international media from Tourism Australia’s key markets around the world with Australian tourism businesses, special interest operators, attractions, and accommodation providers at the International Media Marketplace, powered by TravMedia. ATEC's Accessible and Inclusive – Registration now open
The Australian Tourism Export Council’s (ATEC) Accessible and Inclusive Host program supported by Tourism Australia is a diversity focused business development program with practical learning resources to help industry upskill and prepare their business to successfully welcome guests from all life stages, backgrounds and abilities. The three online learning modules will be delivered via live webinar series, taking place in December 2022 and will also be available on demand. The training includes the Accessible Host Handbook, live support, and recognition (digital badging). The fee will be $100 for ATEC Members and $200 for non-members. Applications for Caravan Parks Grant Program open
The Caravan Parks Grant Program, which supports eligible caravan parks with plans for infrastructure upgrades was announced by the government today. Minister for Trade and Tourism, Senator the Hon Don Farrell launched applications for the program today, which will provide grants of between $10,000 and $100,000 on a shared investment basis for capital expenditure projects at privately-owned caravan parks. South Australia secures another global sporting event
Adelaide/Tarntanya will host Australia’s first LIV Golf tournament in April. The LIV Golf event to be played from April 21 to 23 and feature superstar golfers such as reigning Open Champion Cameron Smith playing at The Grange Golf Club. The Adelaide event kicks off a global 14 tournament schedule across 2023. The weekend event will include a fan village and live performances. The landmark sporting announcement comes a week after South Australia announced it had secured all 18 AFL clubs playing in South Australia across one week in the 2023 AFL season.
Final weeks of spring brings new life to WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo
Darling Habrour’s WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo has officially welcomed their first koala joey of 2022 into the world. Resembling what the keepers call furless ‘little gremlins’, the seven month old joey has safely left its mother’s pouch and is now ready to be viewed by visitors. The joey’s mother Scarlett is part of the WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo’s breeding program. The zoo works to world-class welfare standards through an expert driven animal care network, and has a mandate to follow WILD LIFE Conservation Fund’s mission to protect unique Australian animals and their habitats.
Western Australia’s Peel Region now home to sculpture showcase of giant proportions
The mastery of world-renowned Danish artist, Thomas Dambo, can now be found at the Giants of Mandurah in Western Australia’s Peel region. The spectacular free exhibition of larger-than-life hidden sculptures have been built in secret locations throughout Mandurah. For now, the ‘Giants of Mandurah’ will reside in the region for at least the next year and are expected to attract a high number of visitors to the region. The project has been supported through the Western Australian government’s Regional Events Program amongst other stakeholders after being initiated by local culture organisation FORM.
Luxury and sustainability collide at Mornington Peninsula’s Lakeside Villas
Offering an oasis of luxury and tranquillity, the boutique Lakeside Villas at Crittenden Estate offers the ultimate vineyard escape. The three stylish villas are constructed entirely over the vineyard lake providing a sense of floating among the vines. Each secluded villa comprises a fully self-contained experience with a well-equipped kitchen adjoining a dining area and expansive living room. The Lakeside Villas’ team are busy documenting their sustainability initiatives including the installation of recycled water and sewerage systems, solar powering and two bee hives set to improve the pollination of the property’s plentiful plant life.
