Australia sets new tourism record

Australia welcomed 8.07 million international visitors for the year ending September 2016, the first time the country has broken the eight million visitor mark. The figures, released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, represent an increase of 11.1 per cent or an extra 807,000 visitors relative to the previous year. Leisure arrivals continued to drive international visitor numbers, with an increase of 15.3 per cent over the 12 month period. Arrivals from China have maintained steady growth, up 6.9% for the month of September and up 21.1% in the 12 months to September 2016. To drive further growth from Australia’s highest spending and fastest growing tourism market the Australian Prime Minister and Chinese President have jointly designated 2017 as the Australia-China Year of Tourism.
