European appetite for ETFs We take a look at the retail appetite for ETFs across Europe this week, with our piece from Romain Thomas, writing from Paris.
Thomas writes that even if ETFs continue to break outstanding records in Europe, they have not been embraced yet by the financial adviser community in France.
"The USD1 trillion ETF market remains largely unknown to French savers despite their explosive growth in recent years," he writes, quoting Sébastien d'Ornano, CEO of French on-line financial services firm Yomoni, who says: "As ETFs have a low fee structure, it is not feasible to pay commissions, and hence to date ETFs have not been embraced by the IFA community".
However, new regulations and disruptors such as Yomoni’s d’Ornano are forcing a change. "It will be a step forward for retail investors, and also progress for the ETF industry," according to Etienne Vincent, Head of Quant strategy
and marketing at Ossiam, a subsidiary of Natixis IM.
Meanwhile, reporting from the US, Bailey McCann tackled the subject of launching ETFs with the help of captive assets.
It’s a practice that is growing in popularity, for obvious reasons, but the practice means advisers need to evaluate funds carefully, she warns.
This week sees publication of our latest ETF Innovators’ piece, with Michael Sonnenshein, CEO at Grayscale Investments in the US talking us through ‘The companies of the digital economy’.
