ETF infrastructure and support systems flourish

The growth of ETFs, now reported to have assets of over USD10 trillion, is leading the growth in the infrastructure that underpins them. Our interviews this week bring you a new data provider big xyt, who has paired with ETFbook, to provide daily fund data for their Liquidity Cockpit for ETFs solution.

Their client base consists of exchanges who want to understand the competitive landscape, especially in Europe, where exchanges want to understand their market share for ETFs and the quality of provided liquidity, for example, as seen in the spreads. The firm also works with issuers who are keen to understand how their products are traded and how the notional traded works on a variety of venues. "It’s the same metrics but from a different standpoint," Mess says, "as they are competing to launch products that are of most interest to investors."

Another firm in the ETF service provider space is compliance firm Foreside, with an interview this week with Sonja Formato and Jim Nash, discussing the detailed process behind that increasing trend in the US, converting mutual funds into ETFs. Foreside itself is in the news this week, merging with ACA Group.

ETF Express’s US correspondent, Bailey McCann, has turned her attention to the US fixed income ETF market this week, reporting that low yields are driving investors to fixed income ETFs of all description. "We think there is a significant unmet demand for more specialised exposure within fixed income," BondBloxx co-founder Leland Clemons tells her.

Finally, launches this week were dominated by crypto news with launches from VanEck in the US with a bitcoin futures related ETF with the lowest fees and a bitcoin and blockchain enterprise ETF in the UK from HANetf and ETC Group. We also have 21 Shares adding to their range of crypto ETPs, and Iconic offering a carbon offset facility against its bitcoin ETP.
