ETF appetite moves to the east This week brings us a report from Cerulli Associates in Singapore on the growing appetite for ETFs in Asia. The firm says Asia-Pacific ETF markets have seen record growth in recent years and are emerging as hotbeds of innovation.
Asia ex-Japan’s ETF assets under management (AUM) increased by 217.6 per cent since 2017 to reach USD422.3 billion in 2021, representing an impressive compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 33.5 per cent over the five-year period, the firm says.
Growth has been seen in the leveraged and inverse ETP product range but CFRA’s Aniket Ullal, Head, ETF Data & Analytics, says that education is needed to ensure that investors understand what they are getting into. "The risk is larger for those retail investors who do not monitor their portfolios regularly and hold these products for extended periods of time. That group may not yet fully understand the mechanics of
short and leveraged ETFs," he says.
Finally, we have an interview this week with new arrivals on the European white labelling scene, Waystone ETFs, Dublin-headquartered and under the leadership of a newly put together team of European ETF veterans, headed by CEO Paul Heffernan with Henry Glynn heading up capital markets and ETF distribution.
Heffernan says: ""We can offer a full spectrum of liquidity solutions for investment strategies all the way through to the ETF wrapper. We are essentially an institutional white label provider, but more than that an open architecture ETF solution."
