ESG beats smart beta in trend stakes



Morningstar’s report on smart beta, reviewed this week, reveals that smart beta has dropped from favour across the board, with Director of Global ETF Research, Ben Johnson describing the strategy’s returns as ‘lacklustre’ during the market downturn in the first quarter of the year.

The same cannot be said for ESG, a strategy and filter easily applied through ETFs, and popular the world over at the moment. Sage Advisory’s Bob Smith has commented on his latest survey of ETF providers and their approach to ESG, attempting to sort the observant from the not very…the winner, with the highest ESG standards, was a small publicly listed ETF so size does not matter in the ETF stakes.

This week we also took a deep dive into BNY Mellon IM’s multi-factor high yield ETF with Paul Benson explaining the strategy that lies behind BKHY.

Morningstar’s Director of Global ETF Research, Ben Johnson has commented on his team’s latest report, “A Global Guide to Strategic-Beta Exchange-Traded Products,” which found that as of 12/31/19, there were 1,422 strategic-beta ETPs worldwide, with collective assets under management of approximately USD1.09 trillion.

No sign of a summer lull in ETF launches as yet with a raft of new funds on offer this week. Alerian made its UCITS ETF debut via the HANetf platform, while American Century Investments, Lyxor and Amundi all launched new ESG/sustainable investment funds. Elsewhere, Invesco debuted a currency gold ETC on Xetra, while Amundi added to its low-cost Prime ETF range, Chimera Capital launched a new fund tracking a Shariah-compliant S&P index, and Franklin Templeton listed a new ultra short bond ETF.
