A mixed bag – but still mostly ESG

This week’s newsletter reflects a mixed bag of activity in the ETF space. We don’t have the great summer holiday wind down this year, at least not in the same way as usual as plans are changing and evolving as we come through the pandemic, but it’s certainly still all systems go for the ETF industry. Launches are coming through as strongly as ever, and our industry, often a bellwether indicator for the financial world as a whole, is continuing with its heavy focus on ESG, e-commerce and internet launches.

This week saw an interview with Change Finance, an impact ETF firm which is calling for pay equity across race and gender in the US. We also have a passive investment survey from DWS which reveals that two thirds of pension funds (65 per cent) will increase their climate-linked passive investment, and that there has been an increase in 2020 to 10 per cent of their use of ETFs. The report says: “They are deemed to concentrate on narrow market segments. Also, they are deemed more suitable for short-term investors with high trading activity.”

Finally, welcome back to Adam Laird, formerly of Lyxor and Hargreaves Lansdown, who we have interviewed this week on his new venture.

Work continues on building the speaker list for etfLIVE North America 2020, our digital summit which will be held in October this year. Confirmed speakers now include:  Nick Hooten, Head of Investment Solutions, QS Investors; Todd Rosenbluth, Head of ETF & Mutual Fund Research, CFRA; Dorrit Lowsen, CEO, Change Finance; Michael N. Loukas, CEO, TrueMark Investments; Terry Norman, founder, Blue Tractor; Ed Rosenberg, senior vice president and head of ETFs, American Century Investments; Rick Redding, CEO, The Index Industry Association; Linda Zhang PhD, CEO, Purview Investments and Thomas Kuh PhD, Head of Index, Truvalue Labs.

Rumi Mahmood, head of ETF research, Nutmeg, shares his thoughts on how ETFs behaved during the market crisis of early 2020

We’ve long held the view that in the next market downturn, somewhere down the line ETFs would be vilified. And that happened, initially, with headlines noting: wild swings in premiums/discounts; illusion of liquidity; exacerbating volatility. But after the initial hysteria and alarmist headlines, as calmer heads prevailed and market participants shared their truths, the tune changed, and ETFs emerged as a hero in troublesome times.
