Good morning, Marketer, how’s your data party going? For big tech companies like Facebook and Google first-party data has always been the gold mine that never runs out. That’s not going to be the case in the European Union much longer. Its top court ruled Facebook must get user consent to collect and use data. Also, anyone who doesn’t consent still gets to use their service. While there’s no risk of something similar happening in the U.S., this could hit some big bottom lines very hard. The total population of the EU is nearly twice that of the U.S. and its combined GDP is $17 trillion. That’s basically a tie with China for the world’s second largest economy. So marketers, you better come up with a new way of marketing, fast. Constantine von Hoffman, Managing Editor |
