Scope 3 is difficult to measure, and for that reason most of the discussion on Scope 3 revolves around measurement and reporting. However, for those looking beyond measurement, towards scope 3 target setting and understanding how scope 3 emissions can be reduced in order to achieve targets – this can be challenging, and there is currently a lack of guidance around how companies can plan scope 3 emission reductions, both upstream and downstream. This can lead companies to shy away from committing to concrete targets, downgrade ambition, and prioritise potentially lower impact actions. That is why we are launching this framework, as an attempt to bridge the gap between measurement and actions, and give companies the structures required to increase ambition and put in place meaningful Scope 3 reduction strategies.
