Hey, Creator.

Everything is new now.
​
I wake up to sunlight’s lips kissing its way past window blinds, like a determined teenager. I whisper words of love to the woman beside me, wherever in the world she might be.
​
Then, I rouse. Stretch a little. Cough. Yawn. Do what a nearly forty-year-old body needs to do to prepare for a day.
​
I put on yesterday’s clothes and smile. Walk downstairs. Then round more stairs and head to the kitchen, where I debate what I will eat or if I will eat.
​
I drink a glass of water while the kettle steams and digital piano music plays in the background. My stomach gurgles and I obey.
​
Oven cranked to 350, two slices of bread right on the rack. Water boils. Coffee is brewing. Breakfast begins.
​
Twin slices of bacon sizzle and crack, bending in liquid fat. I warm up the butter by leaving it out on the counter. Everything finds its way when given the right space and time.
​
Cracked eggs yield yellow yolks and clear whites, spilling into the pan indiscriminately. One breaks and bleeds, all the colors coalescing, and I am fine with it.
​
The food comes together on a white plate with a chip in it. I sit at the round table facing the patio, sipping my coffee. At first, it was just coffee, but now it is mine—all of it. What once was egg and water and meat now become my meal. It is all my creation, and I will enjoy it.
​
As buttered-and-salted toast sops up amber yolk smeared across porcelain, I think about the day. What I will create. When it will rain. How everything will happen. And I realize that it’s already happening; it is being done now. And I am the one creating it.
