EXCLUSIVE: Emails show how the Navy scrambled to manage fallout from a spate of suicides

As the Navy reeled from the suicides of five sailors assigned to the USS George Washington two years ago, leaders reacted with anger and denial while discussing news coverage of the deaths, messages obtained by NBC News show.

One of the ship’s commanders admitted to having an “extremely limited understanding of mental health issues,” while leaders dismissed claims about poor living conditions and seemed to disagree about whether to promote the sailors posthumously.
