Dear Reader,

While Britain suffered its worst day of the pandemic yesterday, the vaccination programme – the vital element in bringing it to an end – continues to ramp up. Over recent weeks our excellent reporting has placed pressure on the Government to improve its handling of the rollout, including by involving pharmacies and moving to 24/7 inoculations. Ministers have now begun to implement both measures. You can keep up with how the UK’s vaccination programme is progressing using our new vaccine tracker, which will be regularly updated with official data.

Donald Trump has become the first-ever American president to be impeached for a second time, and this time there is a possibility of conviction. Our own Rozina Sabur was at the Capitol during the mob attack that led to the President’s impeachment. There, she spoke to a rioter who shocked her with his words, and, Rozina later discovered, may have been the man who just minutes earlier was filmed beating a police officer with a flagpole. She tells the full story in this gripping video piece.

The pandemic continues to bring a huge amount of uncertainty, not least around when this latest lockdown will end. While the restrictions save lives from Covid-19 and protect the NHS, they come at a large cost to mental health. For that reason, we have launched our Mental Health Emergency campaign, starting with the stories of five people struggling in isolation.
