EXCLUSIVE: Internal documents reveal European Commission fears over Microsoft dependency
[Brussels, 9 January 2025] Euractiv can reveal that it has seen internal European Commission documents in which officials in the executive express fears it is exposing itself to both data protection and security risks, due to its potentially illegal use of Microsoft software.
European Union inspectors recently instructed the Commission to change its practices and suspend all data flows to countries with inadequate privacy laws like the US.
Publicly the Commission claims there is no alternative to Microsoft, and is suing the internal watchdog that has challenged its use of the software. But privately, it has identified promising sovereign alternatives. According to the documents, the Commission intends to stick with Microsoft despite the concerns because “there are no known credible offerings from European providers.”
