| | Exploring Indonesia | Your first port of call is the sprawling metropolis of Jakarta, be prepared for an utter assault on the senses, as this city of over 10 million people buzzes with energy. Your next stop is Semarang on Java's north coast where an excursion to Borobudur, the Buddhist temple and UNESCO World Heritage Site that dates to the 8th and 9th centuries is a must. Surabaya offers an abundance of excursion options, for Indonesians this 'City of Heroes' is hugely important as it was here that the battle for independence began. A day at sea will prepare you for one of the highlights of this cruise, Komodo Island, home to roughly 5,700 Komodo dragons, the largest lizards in the world. Arriving in Lombok it will be hard not to spot Gunung Rinjani, Indonesia's second-highest volcano. If you're looking to head off the beaten path why not take an excursion to the stunning Gili Islands, fringed by white sand and coconut palms, these islands are a vision of paradise. Cruising across the Wallace Line (a line that marks the boundary between areas populated by Asian and Australian fauna) you'll arrive in Bali where you overnight onboard. We could write a whole blog about what to do in Bali, actually, we did so why not click here to read it. Your final port of call is Probolinggo, where tours to Mount Bromo, one of Indonesia's most spectacular volcanoes, are always in high demand, however, if you're looking to end this Indonesian adventure closer to sea level there are plenty of beautiful beaches, temples, waterfalls and bamboo forests to explore. |
