Juliette Agnel presents a unique project that she created specifically for the space of the Carrousel du Louvre as part of a carte blanche for the Photo Days festival. During the summer of 2024, she visited the Jardin d’Essai of the Zinsou Foundation in Benin. There, she discovered its unique vegetation, a rare testament to the Dahomey gap, a climatic upheaval that occurred in this part of the world 4,500 years ago. Sensitive to the telluric forces, the artist carved her way through this historical cradle of voodoo to work at night in communion with nature. By using smoke and lights of different colors, she creates a distance from her subject — these uniquely resilient plants — while also allowing for a passage to an invisible world.

Remember to Forget

The black body is at the heart of French artist Mame-Diarra Niang’s new series. She doesn’t want to define it, or tell its story. On the contrary, she wants to untie it from the ways it has been represented by centuries of Western narratives. She therefore seeks to make it abstract, through what she calls forms of non-portraits.

Each of the images in this tetralogy can be viewed as an evocation of the artist herself. “What constitutes me?” she ponders. Her personality cannot be reduced to a fixed, imposed or subjected identity. It’s made up of experience, memory and forgetting. As such, it is in perpetual flux. It is this dynamic, this constantly shifting territory, that she explores.

In this work, initiated during a long period of confinement by re-photographing digital screens, Mame-Diarra Niang plays with the characteristic imperfections of conve…

GUIDED TOUR WITH RAYMOND MEEKS
Wednesday, November 6 at 6 p.m.

Recipient of the Immersion program of the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès, American photographer Raymond Meeks spent a long time in France in the year 2022. He photographed in the South, on the border with Spain, and on the northern coast around Calais, two crossing points for asylum seekers on their way to England. He has chosen not to photograph the faces of the displaced, but rather the traces and residue of their itinerancy. There’s a shoe in the dirt, a blanket rolled up on the ground, a jacket hanging on the branches… Meeks is especially attentive to the inhospitable spaces migrants temporarily inhabit: ditches, embankments, motorway roadsides, riverbanks, wastelands and other non-places. Even when not directly visible, rivers are omnipresent in his images. These waterways might even act as a metaphor for migration flows. There are also many obstacles–stony embankments,…

In resonance with the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Letizia Le Fur celebrates the "small games" of everyday life — those fleeting moments that reveal the vibrant energy of the city. Inspired by philosopher Mathieu Triclot, who asserts that "to play is to become human," she explores how these moments shape our connection to urban space. After spending six months in Paris and its suburbs, she notes: "Adults play less than I thought, but I discovered some die-hard players." For her project, she chooses a square format, evoking those games that have survived the digital age: board games, hopscotch, Scrabble tiles... Paris, usually a city-museum, recedes to become the humble setting for our intimate and playful connection to the territory.

Barbara Crane (1928-2019)

The Centre Pompidou presents the first major monograph in Europe dedicated to internationally acclaimed American photographer Barbara Crane (b. Chicago, 1928 – 2019), whose career spans more than sixty years. The exhibition brings together more than 200 works, some of which have recently been acquired by the Musée National d’Art Moderne. In partnership with the Barbara B. Crane Trust, it focuses on the first 25 years of the artist’s career, featuring hundreds of her major works, many of them never exhibited before. Barbara Crane was the creator of a plural body of work, consistently exploring form and photographic techniques (gelatin-silver and digital prints, Polaroid instant prints, photographic transfers, platinum-palladium prints, color, black and white, etc), as shown in the exhibition’s selection.

Barbara Crane studied Photography and Art History at Mills Colleg…

The exhibition No Woman’s Land showcases the work of Kiana Hayeri and Mélissa Cornet, laureates of the 14th Carmignac Photojournalism Award, which focuses on the condition of women and girls in Afghanistan after the Taliban's return to power in August 2021. Presented at the Réfectoire des Cordeliers and on Port de Solférino, this six-month collaborative report was produced with the support of the Fondation Carmignac.

The report No Woman’s Land by Kiana Hayeri and Mélissa Cornet is showcased in a double exhibition in Paris, indoors at the Réfectoire des Cordeliers and outdoors on Port de Solférino, as part of the PhotoSaintGermain Festival, in partnership with Amnesty International.

The exhibition at the Réfectoire des Cordliers seeks to capture the gendered experiences that shape the lives of women and girls under the Taliban regime. Through a spatial narrative, the exhibition moves between the inside/outside dichotomy: a male-dominated outer space where women find themselves looking out from behind metaphorical windows, contemplating the possibilities beyond their reach. In stark contrast, the inner space appears as an ever-shrinking sanctuary, the only place where women can still express their humanity, embodying a realm of potential and aspiration.

Beyond these two realms, however, lies a fragile but crucial in-between space that allows boundaries to be reimagined and safeguard possibilities. A liminal space protected by women journalists and activists who play a pivotal role in using their voices to fight for their rights, challenge norms and advocate for change. They shed light on the hidden narratives and foster the dialogue that empowers women to reclaim their stories, thereby transforming their presence in both the public and private spheres.

The exhibition documents this extremely sensitive situation using a variety of media, including photos, drawings and videos, as well as creating works of art in collaboration with Afghan teenage girls.

For her carte blanche at Sorbonne Artgallery, Fatoumata Diabaté created a series in Mali during the summer of 2024. For about sixty years, and particularly since 2010, the country has been plagued by geopolitical conflicts. With the project Nte bogo daga ye—meaning "I am not pottery" in the Bambara language —Fatoumata Diabaté pays tribute to the victims of the atrocities committed in Ogossagou, a Dogon village destroyed on March 23, 2019, where the entire population was burned alive. Armed with the only weapon she possesses, her art, Fatoumata Diabaté transports us to this "victim space" and bears witness to the suffering associated with this massacre. Through the use of pottery, she confronts the durability of this everyday object—"burned" to be solidified—with the murder of the inhabitants, killed by fire. She approaches this series as a true testimony, expressing both violence and resistance.

For the first time, Photo Days is setting up in the library of the Hôtel de l’Industrie, a space usually closed to the public. This historic venue features an installation by Anaïs Tondeur that unfolds in a play of mirrors, plunging into ancient times to encounter an image of transformation.

As we experience a significant turning point, this photographic research draws from a passage in the Kojiki, a Japanese cosmogonic myth that recounts the rebirth of the world through laughter. Composed of a series of dioramas, referencing the pioneers of photography who came to these places, this installation showcases a series of photographs of landscapes born from the vibrations of human and non-human laughter.

To achieve this, we launched an international "call to laughter" and collected sounds emitted by various entities, whether animal or elemental, that could be associated with laughter. From this global sound journey, composer Floriane Pochon created an acoustic piece that is diffused here under thin membranes covered with a layer of earth and dust.

In a collision of temporal and spatial scales, and following the dynamics of orogenesis—the very principle of mountain formation—each laugh is transmitted for its vibration, setting dust particles in motion, re-arranging matter, and thus creating new worlds.

As part of the Of Soul and Joy project—a photography-centred social and artistic mentoring programme created by Rubis Mécénat in the township of Thokoza in Johannesburg—the endowment fund presents the work of two emerging South African photographers in Paris in November 2024, timed with the 30th anniversary of democracy in South Africa (1994-2024).

The exhibition Ubusukunemini (Day and Night), part of the PhotoSaintGermain festival and curated by Valérie Fougeirol, brings the work of Tshepiso Mazibuko and Sibusiso Bheka into conversation, with regard to current events in South Africa.

These two photographers, beneficiaries of the Of Soul and Joy programme since 2012, belong to the so-called “born free” generation, a term designating the Black youth born after the first non-racial democratic elections in 1994, who thus never experienced apartheid. The…

For the emblematic location cinema venue L'Arlequin, Photo Days gives carte blanche to Ariane Michel. The artist has chosen to focus on the cinematic heritage of FPA France, which preserves classic films by Griffith, Keaton, Eisenstein, and Flaherty, among others. She reinterprets these films in her own way, creating an immersive space in the bar area of L'Arlequin's basement. Her installation blends crafted sounds, photograms from classic films, and her own images to question our perception of the world. Fascinated by the “non-human”—animals, plants, minerals—Ariane Michel invites the viewer to reconsider our relationship with nature, manipulating the scale and hierarchy of beings. Her work, at the intersection of film and installation, creates new mental geographies where the world is perceived differently.

Born to Finnish-Russian parents in Moscow on February 14, 1910, Vladimir Telberg von Teleheim, who signs his name as Val Telberg in his artistic work, was raised in northern China. He attended British, French, Japanese, and American schools in various Chinese cities, as well as in Japan and Korea. In 1928, he received a scholarship to attend Wittenberg College in Springfield, Ohio, where he earned a degree in chemistry in 1932. He immediately returned to China to engage in various activities, including book publishing and selling pharmaceutical products. The Second Sino-Japanese War prompted Val Telberg to return to the United States in 1938, settling in New York. Unable to enlist in the American army due to physical fitness, he moved to an isolated farm in New Jersey in 1941, where he spent an entire year painting, despite never having seriously considered becoming an artist.

In 1942, he began taking painting classes at the Art Students League of New York, where he was introduced to Surrealism and experimental cinema. To earn a living, he became an advertisement salesman, a restaurateur, and worked in a laboratory developing films for nightclub cameramen. In 1944, Val Telberg moved to Florida, where he met his future first wife, Kathleen Lambing (better known as Kathleen Haven).

His career as a photographer truly began upon his return to New York in 1945, in collaboration with his wife. Encouraged by Morris Kantor, his professor at the Art Students League, to explore new directions in photography, he bought his first enlarger and began developing combined images from multiple negatives. In 1948, the Brooklyn Museum of Art offered him the first retrospective of his photomontages, and his talent was showcased in the major historical exhibition organized by Edward Steichen at the MoMA, "In and Out of Focus: A Survey of Today’s Photography".

In 1949, he left for Europe, where he experimented with 16mm film editing at Oxford University. He also lived for some time in Paris. In 1952, he returned to New York and illustrated Anaïs Nin’s "House of Incest". In 1966, Val Telberg began working on large-scale, scroll-like photographs with multiple images. Two years later, he moved to Long Island, where for nearly a decade, he created non-objective cement sculptures and avant-garde multimedia productions with his second wife, the dancer Lelia Katayen. Val Telberg’s works are part of numerous American public collections, including those of the MoMA, the MET, and the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the Getty Museum and LACMA in Los Angeles, and the SF MoMA in San Francisco, which dedicated a retrospective to him in 1983. Les Douches la Galerie has showcased his photos in three group exhibitions between 2014 and 2022, while the Centre Pompidou recently acquired four of his works and displayed t…

The series is characterized by abstract geometric shapes and dynamic compositions. Each piece presents a complex interaction between elements such as circles, straight lines, and angles, evoking both a sense of stability and movement and transformation. These works are not merely aesthetic compositions but also embody deeper ideas about perception and temporality.

By using abstract geometric forms, Man Ray departs from traditional figurative representation. This abstraction invites viewers to freely interpret the works, allowing for a multitude of symbolic meanings.

"Revolving Doors" was influential in the development of abstract art and foreshadowed some of Man Ray’s later explorations in photography and cinema. It showcases the artist’s ability to capture movement and change through abstract and dynamic forms, marking an important milestone in the evolution of modern art in the early 20th century.

Man Ray continues to be celebrated for his boldness and originality, and "Revolving Doors" remains a key work for understanding his artistic approach. This series perfectly illustrates how Man Ray transcended the boundaries of mediums and artistic movements to create works that continue to resonate and inspire today.

Galerie Miranda & Baudoin Lebon: fall partnership

The third chapter of the gallery collaboration features rare black and white works by Ellen Carey (1952, American) from her early series of darkroom experiments Dings & Shadows and Photogenic Drawing ; her abstract, sculptural silver gelatin photograms are presented in dialogue with recent B&W photographs by Tomas Van Houtryve (1975, Belgian-American), of the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, from his series “Thirty Six Views of Notre Dame", produced in partnership with the EPRNDP (Etablissement public chargé de la conservation et de la restauration de la cathédrale Notre Dame de Paris), French public entity in charge of the cathedral's restoration after the 2019 fire. Van Houtryve's documentary images are made with different techniques, both contemporary and 19th century, echoing Carey's contemporary practice with historical photographic processes.

As part of the exhibition series "La jeune photographie allemande", this year, students of Ricarda Roggan at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste are showing their photographic works. The exhibition entitled "PARASITES!" opens during the international photography fair PARIS PHOTO. The Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation organises the exhibition series annually in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Paris.

'PARASITES!' comprises photographic positions that illustrate how a young generation of artists is dealing with the diverse challenges of our present through their work, research and experimentations. The term 'parasites' plays a central role in this case: as a reproach from the right-wing populists against artists and as an expression of deep incomprehension for their work. With both irony and intelligence, the students from Ricarda Roggan's class revolve around this term and the question of the meaning of freedom of art today. Their reactions and interventions are as multifaceted as the current reality is complex. Photography is used in analogue, digital and generated form and accompanied by both performances and sculptural objects. Their perceived alienation sharpens the eye for details that are quickly overlooked in everyday life and constantly refocuses it.

In Mexico, for example, Leonard Elfert finds bizarre hybrids of vegetation and radio masts whose origins are hard to clarify. Jerry Ahn, on the other hand, withdraws to her room for three days and packs everything she finds there in inexpensive wrapping paper. And Fatih Cimdiken leads us into the dramatic landscape of his homeland as a centaur and turns Turkish children's songs into sombre chants.

With the exhibition series "La jeune photographie allemande", the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation and the Goethe-Institut Paris have been promoting young photographers at German universities since 2018, showing current trends in photography. Each year, students from a selected university or academy are invited to present their work in an exhibition at the Goethe-Institut Paris.

After a presentation by Martin Liebscher’s photography class at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach (HfG) in 2018 and one by Heidi Specker’s Master’s students at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig (HGB) in 2019, Adam Broomberg’s and Oliver Chanarin’s photography class at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg (HFBK) in 2021, Beate Gütschow’s photography class at Kunsthochschule für Medien in Cologne in 2022 and students from Ute Mahler and Marit Herrmann at the Ostkreuzschule Berlin followed in 2023.

a retrospective

Fondation Le Corbusier and Almine Rech are pleased to present Le moderne, Günther Förg’s solo exhibition at Maison La Roche in Paris, on view from October 16 to December 14, 2024.

Günther Förg always expressed a complicated and profound relationship to architecture through his work, exploring the connections between abstraction, space, and architecture.

He drew on the formal vocabulary of modernism, both in painting and architecture. His abstract, often monochromatic works were sometimes structured by geometrical lines and blocks of color recalling the principles of order and simplicity associated with architectural movements such as Bauhaus or International Style.

As such, there could be no better setting to show his work than Maison La Roche, designed and built in…

Over the course of the last six months, Kiana and Mélissa travelled to seven provinces in Afghanistan* to investigate the conditions imposed on women and girls by the Taliban, which, according to Amnesty International’s research, could constitute a possible crime against humanity of gender-based persecution. They met with more than 100 women and girls, barred from going to school, forced to stay at home, women journalists and activists continuing to fight for their rights, mothers watching with horror as history repeats itself for their daughters.

They documented how the Taliban, allowed by a deeply patriarchal society, have systematically erased women from society, taking away their most basic rights: to go to school, to university, to work, to travel, to dress as they wish, to go to public baths, to parks, or even to the beauty salon. In late August 2024, the Taliban regime further tightened its control by enacting a new law requiring women to cover their faces with a mask and prohibiting them from having their voices heard in public, including singing, reciting, or reading aloud.

The starkest change that Kiana and Mélissa noted since August 2021 was the general loss of hope among women that things might improve for them, as dreams of having an education and becoming members of society were shattered before them, becoming the primary victims of recurring economic and food crises, and a health system that has all but collapsed. In the words of one women’s rights activist, who has since left the country, seeing no future for herself in Afghanistan: «We have forgotten joy, we don’t know from where any can be found. I’ve lost all motivation. I cry alone, hidden. It’s as if someone has locked me in a room and won’t let me outside. Even food has no taste.»

At the invitation of Photo Days, Carline Bourdelas creates a series for the Rotonde Balzac about the madness and genius of the artist, drawing inspiration from "The Unknown Masterpiece." This short story, around sixty pages long, features an imaginary character, the old master Frenhofer, alongside two historical figures, the Flemish François Pourbus and the very young Nicolas Poussin. Built around the theme of the invisible work, which merges in the artist's imagination with a woman whose reality remains uncertain, the photographs of Carline Bourdelas blend perspectives and create a chaos from which a female figure and the atelier in which she appears sometimes emerge.

Who hasn’t dreamed of seeing what the eye is unable to grasp?
The Green Ray reflects this ambition.
The color of the sky at sunrise and sunset is recorded on the high seas,
according to an exacting photographic protocol by the artist.
The resulting abstractions are a subtle rebuke of human overactivity.
Insofar as the color of the sky, even in the ocean, is intrinsically linked to our presence on earth.
The Green Ray is a work that is both abstract and rooted in the issues and

For its 6th edition, the Maison Ruinart Prize was awarded to photographers Edouard Taufenbach and Bastien Pourtout, a duo that emerged from a project at the Villa Medici in 2020. Following their residency in Champagne, Edouard and Bastien created a series of photographs titled Le Jardin de Craie, which explores the close relationship between biodiversity, the landscape, and the geology of this region.

By blending outdoor and underground photography, this project invites a conversation with the living world, where the mineral, vegetal, and human elements intertwine and extend into one another, often indistinguishable from each other.

Larry Fink was a social photographer. That says two things: He was socially engaged in his work, and he photographed society. People and their interactions were the focus of his passionate interest. He was in the room with them and recognized them as kin, whoever they were. He defined society in its broadest sense. In a career that spanned more than sixty years, he covered debutante balls, Oscar parties, demonstrations, boxing matches, and his neighbors in rural Pennsylvania, all with the same bold framing and masterly chiaroscuro--and with the same urgency, immediacy, and deep human feeling.

Louis Vuitton has been celebrating the art of travel since 1854. Its latest invitation to distant shores will be released this autumn in the form of three previously unseen Fashion Eye photograph albums: US photographer Jackie Nickerson shares a fresh perspective on Iceland, with telluric landscapes and icy shorelines offering fascinating panoramas seemingly from another planet; another US photographer, Deborah Turbeville, highlights her own elusive view of Mexico with echoes of an enigmatic past, where familiar anchors twist and turn in plastic errantry; finally, British photographer Alasdair McLellan turns his keen and sincere eye to a Scotland whose mists obscure its inhabitants as much as its mountaintops. In the same vein as previous publications, each work shares a vision of a country, region, city, or location as seen through the lens of a fashion photographer.

Pink Ribbon Photo Award

Estée Lauder Companies

Created in 2012, The Estée Lauder Companies Pink Ribbon Photo Award is open to all photographers.
A pioneer of its kind and today an essential support component of the French Ruban Rose Association, mobilizing through photography a large public in the annual Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign.

In 2024, the call for entries for the 13th edition of the competition has been focused on the theme "Lumière(s)". Since 2017, Paris Photo welcomes the Estée Lauder Companies Pink Ribbon Photo Award, as its charity partner.

Atelier de Restauration et de Conservation des Photographies

After last year's negatives, the Atelier de Restauration et de Conservation des Photographies de la Ville de Paris (Photography Conservation and Restoration Studio) has chosen this year to unveil its restoration work on the colour slide medium. The teams will be presenting exceptional prints from the "C'était Paris en 1970" collection held by the Bibliothèque Historique de la Ville de Paris (BHVP). This amateur photographic competition enabled the capital to be photographed in 1970 in 250m x 250m squares. Of the 15,000 candidates, a total of 2,800 photographers produced nearly 30,000 slides reflecting Paris from a wide variety of perspectives.

Gaza Walls by Taysir Batnij

Gaza Walls (2001) is a photographic series created by Taysir Batniji in Gaza during the early months of the Second Intifada. This project focuses on how the city’s walls and doors, which have served as carriers of information since the First Intifada (1987-1993), transform into vectors of collective memory. The project features portraits, posters, slogans, graffiti, and other inscriptions that announce the disappearances and succes- sion of faces destined to fade over time or through interventions. Batniji explores the formal, symbolic, and identity-related complexities of these images, which oscillate between persistence and evanescence, reflecting the fragility and resilience of collec- tive memory in times of conflict.

Lithuanian photographs from the collections of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the Centre Pompidou, and the Lithuanian Photographers Association

Beginning in the late 1970s, when Lithuania had been under Soviet rule for three decades, more than 1,600 prints entered the collections of what is today the BnF (Bibliothèque nationale de France) thanks to donations from the 22 photographers. This body of work, centred on a generation of photographers who worked mainly in the 1960s to 1980s, reveals a highly expressive scene characterised by eternal, metaphysical themes. Pantheistic relationship with nature, close connections between humans and the animal kingdom, cohabitation of generations, and existential angst: These works furnish a poignant illustration of a country whose dense forests, spirit of resistance, and passion for poetry have come together to forge a powerful and…

Paris Photo, Picto Foundation, and SNCF Gares & Connexions are partnering for the 8th year to develop a platform for discovery, visibility, exchange, and meetings aimed at young talents. Launched in 2017, the Carte Blanche Students program is designed for bachelor’s and master’s students from European photography and visual arts schools, aiming to foster emerging talent and encourage creativity and energy.

The projects of the four selected students, chosen from over 100 European schools, will be showcased at the Paris Photo fair from November 7 to 10, 2024, in a dedicated space where they will engage with the public. Additionally, an exhibition will be held at the forecourt of Paris Gare de Lyon from October 28 to November 30, 2024.

This project is supported by Hahnemühle, La Saïf, and La Copie Privée.
