Dear Friend,

Expanding Access to Telehealth
Throughout the pandemic, telehealth has been a godsend for millions of Americans receiving health care services from the safety of their own homes. As Ranking Member of the Senate Aging Committee, I am committed to protecting and building on these life-saving services for folks in South Carolina and across the country – our seniors in particular. That is why I reintroduced the bipartisan Telehealth Modernization Act, which expands telehealth coverage and ensures patients can access it from anywhere in the U.S. You can read more about the bill here.
Talking with the Next Generation of Leaders
As we wrapped up Black History Month last week, I released a video of my conversations with children from Meeting Street Academy in Charleston. The kids shared their dreams for the future, and I told them about the great legacies of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Justice Thurgood Marshall, men who influenced the trajectory of my life and taught me that all people are created equal by God.

I also gave a message to students from Rollings Middle School of the Arts, Bluffton High School, and West Ashley High School about my personal journey and my Grandaddy Artis Ware, who grew up picking cotton in the segregated South. I owe so much of my success to him for setting an example of hard work and the life-changing power of a good education. You can view these videos and more of my Black History Month events here.
HBCU Fly-In Explores the Future of Education and Business
On Wednesday, I hosted my fifth annual HBCU Fly-In to celebrate America’s more than 100 Historically Black Colleges and Universities. HBCU leaders from across the country gathered virtually this year to hear speakers including Super Bowl champion and entrepreneur Emmitt Smith and bipartisan, bicameral members of Congress. We had great discussions about the importance of diversity in academics and the workplace, access to venture capital, and African American leadership in the armed services.
We are blessed to have several fantastic HBCUs in South Carolina. Shoutout to Claflin University, Morris College, Voorhees College, Denmark Technical College, Clinton College, Allen University, Benedict College, and South Carolina State University for attending! If you missed it, you can watch the event here. And if you would like to stay up to date on my educational efforts, please sign up for my education newsletter here.
Have a great week!
Sincerely,
