The Battle of Galveston, which began in the early morning hours of January 1, 1863, is widely regarded as Galveston’s most significant military event. The battle lasted several months, took place on both land and water, and culminated with Confederate forces forcing away Union ships that had occupied Galveston Harbor since October 1862.
