Tradition meets modernity at this experimental jazz concertTwo of London’s most fascinating music festivals collide this week, in a concert which infuses Korea’s musical heritage with the spirit of jazz. K-Music Festival 2024, in partnership with the EFG London Jazz Festival, presents SMTO No-Noise at the Southbank Centre on Friday 15 November. This experimental jazz ensemble — led by Lee Il-woo of post-rock band Jambinai — blend ancient Korean folk instruments with contemporary guitar and synth. Lee Il-woo mixes electronic sounds with the piri (a double-reed flute), while Sung Si-Young plays the taepyeongso (a double-reed oboe). Hwang Min-Wang — of Black String fame — brings dynamic percussion and vocal talents to SMTO No-Noise. Then there’s Lee Na-Rae on daegeum (a large bamboo flute), Yoon Ji-Hyun playing the gayageum (a 12-string zither) and Lee Ah-Young on the saenghwang (a complex mouth organ) from the stellar Seoul Metropolitan Traditional Orchestra (SMTO). Together, they conjure up a compelling mix of ancient and modern sounds. Get tickets to see SMTO No-Noise in concert by clicking below. And if you’re craving more K-Music goodness, be sure to check out Heemoon Lee & OBANGSINGWA, also at the Southbank Centre, on 23 November.
