Our new study reveals a windfall for the rich and crumbs for the rest

Free Press Action

Friend,

I wanted to keep you in the loop about some really bad legislation that could directly impact you and other California residents.

Remember how hard we fought earlier this year (and last year) to urge Congress to abandon the terrible Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA)? Remember how it was pushed by notorious hedge funds and Big Media lobbyists from Sinclair and Gannett? These entities see local news as something they can decimate for their own financial gain, which goes against everything we believe in here at Free Press Action.

Well, California lawmakers aren’t on the same page as us, because they’ve drawn inspiration from the JCPA and come up with something even worse: the California Journalism Preservation Act (CJPA). Different name, same danger to ever-important local journalism.

We’ve published a new deep-dive report detailing the CJPA’s financial, political and ethical risks — and highlighting some alternative solutions that would actually protect local newsrooms without catering to industry powerhouses. Read more in our latest blog post, and we’ll be in touch soon with ways you can help fight this bad bill before it becomes a bad law.

Thanks for staying informed,

Candace and the rest of the Free Press Action team

P.S. Free Press Action will need all hands on deck as we fight to stop this bad bill from becoming law. Can we count on your support?
