This Week in Washington, D.C.Last week the House of Representatives passed the “Respect for Marriage Act” (H.R. 8404) with strong bipartisan support. Largely introduced as a response to Justice Thomas’s concurring opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson and in anticipation of the upcoming midterms, this bill codifies a right to same-sex marriage that was previously found in the 2015 Obergefell decision. The ERLC is strongly opposed to this legislation. We believe marriage is an institution created by God, not by man, and that marriage requires the specific union of a man and a woman for life (Gen. 2:24). The language of the bill also raises religious liberty concerns and it remains unclear if it would codify federal recognition to civil marriages that go beyond the scope of two individuals in states that allow it. This week the ERLC sent a letter of opposition voicing these concerns to all 50 Senators who will now consider the bill in the coming days. We will continue to advocate against this harmful bill that goes against God’s good design for marriage and poses a threat to those who hold such a view.
