Free events to feed your mind from the British Academy

The British Academy is back with another bumper programme of virtual events to banish lockdown boredom and broaden your horizons. This March, the UK's home for the humanities and social sciences presents a tantalising trio of talks that draw on the latest thinking across a range of disciplines.

Discover the power of rhetoric in the digital age with Professor Dame Marina Warner FBA. Travel back in time to Victorian Britain and find out how economic growth impacted gender inequality. Or look to the future for a discussion on how Brexit will shape the lives of citizens living overseas, and challenge concepts of Britishness.

Each event is captioned and completely free to access, though you need to book your place in advance for live events. Click below to see the full line-up, or read on for this month's highlights.

The Practice Of Rhetoric

How much do you know about the art of persuasion? Ahead of World Book Day, author, historian and mythographer Professor Dame Marina Warner FBA argues that studying the uses of rhetoric is key to combatting misinformation in the digital age. The latest in the British Academy's series of 10-Minute Talks, this event is pre-recorded and will be released via the Academy's YouTube channel on 3 March.

Brits Abroad In The Brexit Age

As the UK sets out on a new chapter outside the European Union, Dr Michaela Benson explores what Brexit might mean for British citizens living overseas. This live Zoom webinar, which takes place on 9 March, explores the notion of Britishness through the lens of émigré identity, touching on colonial legacies, international relations, and contemporary UK politics.

Women And Work In Victorian Britain

The Victorian era was a period of massive economic growth. But how did the 19th-century boom affect the lives of women? Join author and historian Professor Emma Griffin for a live Zoom webinar on 18 March to find out. She'll discuss the structure of work and family life in Victorian Britain and interrogate why the wage gap persists to this day.
