Face masks the new norm until pandemic is eradicated

It’s hard to believe that just a few short months ago the concept of wearing face masks or coverings in public would become, in some situations, a matter of course.

Previously, face masks were the domain of visitors from the Far East used to avoid polluted air and usually seen in the bigger cities.

Or maybe you’d wear one if indulging in a spot of welding or perhaps, cleaning the oven.

Now the government has spelled it out. Face coverings are compulsory if you travel on public transport in England and will be worn whether you are a traveller of a staff member. The world has changed. When film-makers in the 60s were imagining a future dystopian world this was it. But for us it is the new normal until this pandemic has been eradicated.

Many are flippant about this idea and declaring they won’t cover their face. Presumably they are the souls who have not lost loved ones or allowed Covid-19 to impact their lives. It is worth remembering that right now we are still seeing an average of 300 deaths per day.

Now is not the time to drop our guard.

The Prime Minister introduced 'support bubbles' this evening, where one household can meet up with another from the weekend onwards. Another way of life unimaginable just a few months ago.
