TODAY'S TOP STORYAttack ads go (deep)fakeLetβs make sure weβre all on the same page. What are βdeepfakes?β Special computer programs can make videos or pictures look like they show someone saying or doing something, but it's not real. It can make someoneβs face look like itβs on another personβs body or make them say things they never really said. These computer programs can make it seem like someone famous, like a celebrity or a politician, is doing or saying things they didn't actually do or say. These are called deepfakes. And this brings me to Ron DeSantisβ recent attack ad against Donald Trump. First, a word between you and meThis next presidential campaign is going to be loaded with deepfakes. Donβt even think about dropping me a line saying, βOh, Kim, youβre only reporting this 'cause you hate Trumpβ or βI knew it, youβre a Trump lover.β Iβm like the U.N. here. Put your politics aside so I can tell you whatβs going on with AI and deepfakes. This isn't about politics. Itβs me trying to make you tech aware and smart. Got it? Hereβs what you need to knowThis week, the βDeSantis War Roomβ account on Twitter shared a video with lots of examples of Trumpβs support of Anthony Fauci β you know, former White House chief medical advisor. Weaved in with authentic clips of Trump and Fauci are six images of the two together. Now, half of those images are fake and AI-generated. What they show never happened. But the video sure makes it look like it did. AFP Fact Check was the first to spot the fakes. Letβs take a look at the tells: The fakes donβt bring up any results in reverse image searches. You can bet any real pics of Trump will appear across many sites. The images are strangely glossy and blurry. (Take a look at their hair and skin.)Their poses and the way they're positioned together look weird and unnatural. The White House briefing room and signs in the background are off, too. Look at the nonsense text on one of the signs. How can you spot deepfakes?OK, it's easy to see those fakes now that we've reviewed the details. But what about next time you run into something strange online? Try the reverse image search trick. From your computer, right-click the pic in your browser, then choose βSearch image with Google.β A big red flag is if you canβt find it being posted by any other reputable source.AI has a notoriously hard time getting hands right. Count the fingers β seriously.Look closely at skin and hair, too. Anything too smooth, shiny or blurry should make you think twice.Do a gut check. Does it feel real? Thereβs often an unexplainable but odd quality to AI images.β This is important stuff, no matter your politics. Donβt be that person sharing deepfake images and news. Share this story to help the people in your life spot fakes, too. |
DEAL OF THE DAY

WEB WATERCOOLERπ¦ No, your bank didn't text you: Phony text messages pretending to be your bank are the No. 1 scam now. Donβt fall for it. Get a fake text? Forward it to 7726 (SPAM) and report it to the FTC. Stay tuned: Amazonβs following Netflix and adding commercials to a lower-priced Prime Video membership level. It worked for Netflix. They signed up almost 5 million customers for its ad-supported plan in the first six months, and over 25% of new signups are on the advertising tier. π¦ Big Brother: Law enforcement in Toledo, Ohio, wants residents to register their home security cameras with the city. This way, the police can tap into a cameraβs live or stored footage whenever they want, without a subpoena. Good idea or bad? Let me know on Twitter. House-hunter style: Those modern, sleek TV consoles are passe. If you want to be with the times, put a snazzy bedroom dresser in your living room. Then, place the TV on top or mount it on the wall. It looks better and you get more junk drawers. TRENDING2023, when even the volcanoes livestreamYouTube has it all: A capybara eating an entire watermelon, Mr. Beast giving away puppies, my show and a massive volcano erupting in real time. Kilauea, one of the worldβs most active volcanoes, is on the Big Island of Hawaii. Itβs been erupting constantly since 1983. Sometimes things are low-key. Right now, not so much. Hereβs a fun fact for you: There was once a golf course on Kilauea. The old clubhouse is still there, and the 19th hole was the caldera. Iβm not joking! π If youβve never seen a volcano erupt β¦The best way I can describe it is β¦ very waterlike. The surface ripples and bright orange magma shoots up. Itβd be beautiful if it weren't so scary! The good news is, according to Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, populated areas are safe from lava flows. π What does a baby volcano say to his volcano mom? Magma. OK, now I know you want to see Kilauea in action. Check out the livestream here. |
DEVICE ADVICEPro tip: Schedule your emailsDonβt be that person whoβs constantly emailing coworkers at 7 p.m. Same goes for emails to friends at 2 a.m. Schedule emails for the morning instead β or when you know your recipient will see them. If you use an iPhone or Mac, you probably rely on Mail. After you compose an email, press and hold the blue send arrow (on your phone) or click the menu to the right of the send arrow (on your computer). A pop-up will prompt you to pick a time. Nice.Itβs easy in Gmail, too. On your phone, select the three-dot menu in the top right corner, then Schedule send. On your computer, click the downward arrow next to Send.Maybe you use Microsoft Outlook users. (My apologies.) Hit the Options tab in the message window. Select Delay delivery.π I got an email today from someone, and in their email signature, they put their pronouns as βThey, Them.β So when I responded, I hit βReply All.β π Look at you, not annoying people with late-night or early-morning emails. Now take that good energy and clean up your inbox. This is how in Gmail. |

Grab your barf bags. $10 How much Salesforce is donating to charity, per day, for each worker who comes back to the office. Theyβre having trouble getting people to stop working from home. I like going to the studios even though I can work from home β you know, so I can surround myself with some company. |
WHAT THE TECH?This photo is trending. Itβs fake. Someone asked AI to create a baby photo of Elon Musk. But he sure is a cute kid! |
UNTIL NEXT TIME ...π The answer: Many people mistakenly think βWi-Fiβ is short for βWireless Fidelity.β Actually, it means nothing. The Wireless Alliance needed an easy-to-remember name for the standard βIEEE 802.11b Direct Sequence.β They hired a marketing agency and they came up with Wi-Fi. Go ahead, use this trivia question to get a free drink next time youβre out. π One more before you go: A man sits down at a bar and asks the bartender for the Wi-Fi password. The bartender replies, βYou have to buy a drink first.β So the man orders a soda and says, βSo whatβs the Wi-Fi password?β The bartender replies, βYou have to buy a drink first, all lowercase, no spaces.β Thanks for being here.
