False conspiracy theories that Hurricane Milton is part of a political plot are still spreading

As Milton's damage and recovery needs became clear, officials raced to quell false conspiracy theories spreading online about Hurricane Milton and the aid available for those affected.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., continued to imply that the back-to-back hurricanes weeks before the election were part of a political plot, and former President Donald Trump's debunked claim that emergency funds were given illegally to migrants continued to spread on X.

Experts pointed to the danger of political leaders' spreading misinformation. “Falsehoods around hurricane response have spawned credible threats and incitement to violence directed at the federal government," a report from a London-based think tank found.
