| IMPORTANT | | | Payback | Fears of Retribution, Violence Follow FBI Search of Trump Residence “Civil war! Pick up arms, people!” is just one of a slew of far-right responses online in the aftermath of Monday’s search at former President Donald Trump’s Florida residence. The federal judge who signed the warrant has been threatened across the internet, while extremism researcher Caroline Orr Bueno flagged “a disturbing number of elected Republicans and influential right-wing figures” involved in inflaming the rhetoric. Elsewhere, details on what was taken from Mar-a-Lago remain scant. Still, pundits say, the search has all but confirmed that Trump is the subject of a criminal investigation by the Department of Justice. (Sources: WaPo, The Hill) |

| | Keeping Watch | China White Paper Warns Taiwan of ‘Zero Tolerance’ on Separatism “We are ready to create vast space for peaceful reunification, but we will leave no room for separatist activities in any form,” said a white paper from China’s Taiwan Affairs Office Wednesday. It follows days of military drills around the island, which China claims as its territory. Violence and force will only be used as a last resort or to rein in separatist activities, it said. Meanwhile, Chinese Ambassador to Australia Xiao Qian said he was “surprised” to see Australia sign a statement with the U.S. and Japan condemning the drills, and warned caution when handling “the Taiwan question.” (Sources: AFP, AP) |

| | Charged | Suspect Detained in New Mexico Murders of 4 Muslim Men Albuquerque’s Muslim community has been so rattled by a series of shooting murders that in recent weeks some have left the city. Now, police have a suspect in custody thanks, in part, to tips received from within the community. Muhammad Syed has been charged with two of the murders and is a suspect in the others. Police speculate he may have been motivated by his daughter’s marriage to a man from another branch of Islam. Syed has denied his involvement in the killings, but has told law enforcement he is familiar with at least two of the murdered men. (Sources: Albuquerque Journal, NYT) |

| | Holding Ground | Crimea Blast Puts Peninsula at the Center of Conflict Tuesday afternoon explosions at a Russian airbase in Crimea have killed at least one. Social media footage of the blasts on the Saky military base in Novofedorivka, along the western coast of Crimea, showed plumes of smoke. Russia says ammunition stored at the site exploded, and Ukraine has not formally claimed a strike at the base 110 miles from the frontline. Still, Crimea is where the war began and is where it must end, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said separately, without noting the strike. “Crimea is Ukrainian and we will never give it up,” he said. The counterterror arm of the U.N. warned Tuesday that the Islamic State group has quietly shifted operations online during the pandemic, with a focus on recruitment and financing. | INTRIGUING | | Streeeetch | FDA Approves Novel Vaccine Injection Amid Monkeypox Spread The Food and Drug Administration has authorized the intradermal injection — between layers of skin rather than into body fat — at the request of the Biden administration, just a week after the declaration of a health emergency. “In recent weeks the monkeypox virus has continued to spread at a rate that has made it clear our current vaccine supply will not meet the current demand,” FDA Commissioner Dr Robert Califf said of the decision. Now just a fifth of the dose is needed per injection, allowing health officials to vaccinate far more Americans. Two doses are required for full vaccination. (Source: NPR) |

| | Permaban | Guilty: Former Twitter Employee-Turned-MBS Spy In a two-week trial Egypt-born Ahmad Abouammo was found guilty of acting as an agent for Saudi Arabia, as well as money laundering and wire fraud charges. He faces a maximum of 20 years. Abouammo allegedly turned over personal details of anonymous users who criticized the Saudi government and royal family on the platform. Prosecutors allege Abouammo received $300,000 in bribes from Mohammed bin Salman’s aide Bader al-Asaker for handing over the information. Abouammo’s legal team denied he was the “mastermind,” alleging that U.S. authorities and Twitter “botched” the investigation, allowing an alleged co-conspirator to flee to Saudi Arabia. | | Historical Crimes | Accuser Dodges Indictment Nearly 70 Years After Emmett Till Murder A grand jury in Mississippi’s Leflore County found insufficient evidence to try Carolyn Bryant Donham on charges of kidnapping and manslaughter. “We vow that the pursuit of accountability and Justice For Emmett Till will continue,” Till’s cousin, Deborah Watts, said. Bryant Donham was 20 years old in 1955 when she accused 14-year-old Till of whistling at her and grabbing her wrist. He was later kidnapped, beaten and shot by her husband and his half-brother. A filmmaker discovered an unserved warrant dating back to the ’50s earlier this summer, spurring fresh calls to hold Bryant Donham legally accountable for the murder. (Source: CNN) |

| | | That’s Not Amore | Arrivederci to Domino’s Italia The U.S. chain opened in Milan in 2015 with a local partner, hoping to introduce Italy to American-style delivery systems — and pineapple on a slice. Initially, expansion went well, with Domino’s opening 34 outlets across the country and eyeing an eventual 850 stores. Then the pandemic hit. The pizza chain’s home delivery model was no longer a novelty and rival businesses thrived as Italians stayed home. Domino’s creative toppings were no competition in a country where one pizza rules them all. “Neapolitan pizza is the mother of all pizza, even Italian pizza,” said one industry leader. Williams, 40, did not announce a date for her retirement but said she wants to have another child. “If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family,” she said. Williams’ announcement has already set the tennis world abuzz with tributes noting her immense talents on the court and her crossover appeal to the mainstream — she’s featured on magazine covers and in advertising campaigns.
