In government statistics, industries are defined at the establishment level, not by the industry of the firm. This means that R&D, corporate management, logistics, advertising and branding sites are often counted as services. As revealed in a MAPI Foundation report, the manufactured goods value chain accounts for about one-third of US GDP and employment. YouTube

MAPI Foundation: Innovation, capital investment key to productivity
Innovation and capital investment are key drivers in multifactor productivity growth across various manufacturing subsectors, according to a MAPI Foundation study that analyzes 25 years of activity. MAPI Foundation study: Manufacturing underrepresented in official statistics
Research by the MAPI Foundation has determined that manufacturing's effect on the economy is understated by official government metrics. Instead, manufacturing actually accounts for about one-third of gross domestic product, three times the effect that official measures suggest. "Economic statistics say that manufacturing industries are of only minor importance, but our research shows that they lie near the center of a substantial and complex value chain...," Chief Economist Dan Meckstroth said.
