#1 FCC Chairman Outlines Plan To Reverse Title II Open Internet Rules
FCC Chairman Ajit Pai outlined his plan to overturn net neutrality regulations in a speech today at an event at the Newseum in Washington hosted by FreedomWorks and the Small Business and Entrepreneurship (SBE) Council.
WHY THIS MATTERS: Pai plans to reverse the classification of internet service providers as Title II common carrier services and plans to vote on a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to that effect at the May 18 meeting. He called it "a fight that we intend to wage and a fight that we are going to win."

#2 ESPN Layoffs to Affect 100 Employees
ESPN president John Skipper revealed today that the company will be laying off staff this week as the company attempts to retrench. Reports suggest that as many as 100 jobs are on the line, most of them on-air talent and writers.
WHY THIS MATTERS: The cuts come as the sports network faces increasing rights fees and falling revenue in the cord-cutting era. Skipper said that the sports industry is evolving and ESPN needs to change with it.

#3 AT&T Loses 233,000 Video Subscribers in Q1
AT&T revealed that it lost 233,000 domestic pay-TV subs in the first quarter. DirecTV satellite subscriber growth remained flat, while U-verse TV subscriber losses continued.
WHY THIS MATTERS: AT&T did not disclose updated sub numbers for DirecTV Now, the OTT TV service it launched last November, but noted that DirecTV Now gains helped to offset its decline in linear TV subscribers. Overall, the company ended Q1 with 25.06 million domestic video subscribers, including 21.01 million DirecTV subscribers, up 4.5% year-on-year, and 4.02 million U-verse TV subscribers, down 23.2%.

Quote Of The Day

I think we have a very bad customer experience right now with a lot of ad-supported video, and that is both traditional and non-traditional. We are not giving the consumers a very good exchange for what they're doing for us and what we're doing for them. And we are encouraging them to either go to subscription, like Netflix or HBO, or we are pushing them into a situation where they're using ad-skipping technology or both.
