Born Helen Kowalska on August 25, 1905, she joined the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy and on April 30, 1926 she received her habit and took the name Sister Maria Faustina of the Blessed Sacrament. On February 22, 1931, Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ appeared to this simple nun and gave her the message of His Divine Mercy for all mankind. She was canonized on April 30, 2000 and is venerated within the Church as the Apostle of Divine Mercy.
