Here are the headlines making news in Baton Rouge this afternoon.
with Kelly P. Kissel | Metro editorThere's horrible news out of Denham Springs today. A young man who, according to his mother, suffered heat stroke during high school football practice this week died overnight at a New Orleans hospital. We have a short story up now, and two reporters working this story will have updates later, so check back in. There's no word yet from Louisiana's secretary of state on whether he'll appeal a judge's decision calling for expanded absentee balloting amid the coronavirus pandemic. As Mark Ballard reports from the Capitol, the secretary skipped using his state email account to spread a warning Friday about misinformation, and while there praised his fellow party members and criticized a "liberal wish-list." Officials in St. James Parish say their calculations on how rapidly the coronavirus is spreading show they meet the criteria to reopen bars. Figures used by the state in their Thursday-to-Wednesday count do not. If the parish officials are correct, St. James would be the first parish in the Baton Rouge area to reopen its bars and taverns. And in a subject near and dear to my heart, as a former high school and small college football official in other states, Robin Fambrough notes that more schools may need to play on Thursdays because the pandemic has chased a number of game officials away from the field. Thursdays are always school nights and Fridays are often test days. Check out these and more interesting local stories from our reporters. And thanks for reading! |
