Gulf dolphins with drugs in their fat: Why, and what does it mean for us?

BY DOUG GRAHAM | Staff writer

A recent study found a concerning development: Dolphins in the waters off the Gulf Coast have traces of human medications — including powerful opioids, muscle relaxants and sedatives — in their fat. The findings are troubling, scientists said, because dolphins are key indicators of marine health.

"We should not really see any human pharmaceuticals present in dolphins and in our waters,” says Anya Ocampos, who authored the study.

It also means humans may be consuming drugs through seafood or water, too.
