Perhaps last year’s kicking that Ferrari received by its rivals was just what it needed to bounce back strongly in 2021.
Previously, Ferrari has relied a lot on its F1 power unit, so when its output was pegged back by the FIA’s engine regulations clampdown – which led to its infamous ‘private settlement’ – its aerodynamic deficiency, namely a draggy chassis, was badly exposed. Its worst season in 40 years was the result, but the bonus of that was extra time in the wind tunnel over the benchmark Mercedes team.
Apart from that garishly-green ‘MW’ on the engine cover, what first catches the eye with its new SF21 is the rear section of the sidepods. Looking far more trimmed and svelte, it looks a lot less bulky in this region thanks to a new transmission and suspension. It looks a lot more like a proper F1 car again to me. |
