As Ken Ferrie looks at the initial yield results coming in from across the Midwest, he wants to remind farmers that picket-fence corn stands with photocopied plants – uniform stalks and ears – support high yield results. Ferrie says Mother Nature’s “photocopy machine” didn’t work the best in some parts of corn country. He advises farmers to consider these points as they make yield estimates.
Missy Bauer says the hot and dry weather the past month has caused corn to mature and dry down too quickly, which can impact yields because “so much yield today comes from the depth or the size of the kernel itself.” The timing of the heat and lack of moisture has been even worse for soybeans.
