The Aspen Ideas Festival and Aspen Ideas: Health are less than two months away! Here's a peek at some of the conversations you'll hear over the 10 days of the event. These ideas highlight three (of nearly 20) tracks at the Festival and Health. Watch for more ideas in your inbox later this month.

Frontiers of Health and Medicine (Health)

The most fundamental unit of life is a cell but we know little about them. Scientists want to learn more. They're creating reference maps of all human cells to better diagnose, monitor, and treat disease. Aviv Regev, organizing committee co-chair of the Human Cell Atlas project, explains the endeavor.

Nearly half of all medical care delivered in the US happens in emergency rooms. How can new technologies help patients receive primary care elsewhere? Esther Choo, emergency doctor and associate professor at Oregon Health and Sciences University, and Ali Raja, executive vice chair of the emergency department at Mass General Hospital, discuss how innovation is poised to transform emergency medicine, both inside and outside of the ER.

Next World Order (Festival 1 and Festival 2)

Asylum seekers, the Wall, border security — so much is happening at America's southern border. Former Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson sits down with Vicente Fox Quesada, former president of Mexico, and Jorge Guajardo, former Mexican Ambassador to China, to unravel the situation and talk over next steps on immigration.

Brian Hook, US special representative for Iran, says, “Iran is engaging in nuclear blackmail.” As tensions between the US and Iran escalate — is there hope for a peaceful resolution? One year after the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, Hook explains what's next in the region.

Understanding Emotion (Festival 1)

What makes us tick? Thanks to an explosion in the science of emotion, we’re getting closer to understanding ourselves says psychologist and neuroscientist Lisa Barrett of Northeastern University. She unpacks the unique interplay of brain, body, and culture in the formation of emotions.

Nicholas Epley, director of the Center for Decision Research at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, examines the high cost of loneliness that we’re mistakenly baking into our daily lives. What’s the role of technology in making us feel isolated? Hint, it’s not just your smartphone.

And while it’s easy to blame technology for social ills, advances in artificial emotional intelligence are making it possible to detect all things human, and harness deep learning for the greater good. Rana el Kliouby, co-founder and CEO of Affectiva, will show how emotion-measurement technology is disrupting industries from automotive to health care to market research.
