Some events to sneak into your schedule |
This headline certainly caught my eye today - Urban Salvage Vintage Market to feature 100-plus vendors from across Michigan. If I didn't already have plans, you may have caught me making a trip to Bay City this weekend. Score a deal if you're attending! As for next weekend, prepare to see an abundance of melons as the 64th-annual Howell Melon Festival takes place Thursday, Aug. 15, to Sunday, Aug. 18, in downtown Howell. It features a variety of events to honor the cantaloupe hybrid. If you haven't had a chance to go off-roading yet, the second and final Free ORV Weekend of 2024 is scheduled for Aug. 17-18, giving riders the chance to cap off their summer with a free adventure. |

‘Fight for the future,’ Kamala Harris rallies crowd of 15,000 in Michigan |
Recap: A crowd of 15,000 people roared for Vice President Kamala Harris as she and her new running mate rallied supporters for her presidential campaign in a Detroit Metropolitan Airport hangar Wednesday, Aug. 7. Harris spent large chunks of her speech painting herself in stark contrast to her Republican opponent, Donald Trump. Harris appeared along with Tim Walz, as well as Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and a lineup of the state’s top Democrats. Harris and her delegation hit on key themes of Democrats’ 2024 platform: protecting election integrity, supporting labor unions, preventing gun violence, advancing policy addressing climate change, and protecting women’s abortion rights. On the Republican side: J.D. Vance in his second Michigan campaign stop spoke to reporters in front of the Shelby Township Police Department where he accused Tim Walz of embellishing parts of his military career. |

$41M plant breaking ground in Michigan promises to make ethanol out of milk byproduct |
To know: A Canadian company that got its start distilling milk byproduct into spirits, like its “Vodkow” vodka, and a large cooperative owned by Great Lakes dairy farmers have broken ground on a new Michigan plant promising to unite their businesses to make ethanol. The vast majority of U.S. ethanol, blended into most gasoline available at the pump, is fashioned from corn, but Ontario-based Dairy Distillery and the Michigan Milk Producers Association, or MMPA, have a different plan. More in business: A much smaller than normal fleet of boats is handling the ferry traffic to Mackinac Island during this summer’s peak tourist season - an issue that’s likely to continue, ferry officials said. Another environmental headline: Eerie ghost pipe plants found at Sleeping Bear are a sign of a healthy forest |

Time of Tuesday’s Tornado Warnings were rare for Michigan |
Tuesday morning, a rotating thunderstorm in southern Michigan prompted several Tornado Warnings to be issued. One unique thing about these warnings was the time at which they were issued. The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids issued one at 7:38 a.m. for Van Buren County, the first during that hour since July 21, 1998, according to data from Iowa State University. Another Tornado Warning was issued at 8:10 a.m. for Kalamazoo County, the first-ever issued in the 8 a.m. hour for that office. The upcoming forecast: We have admittedly had a stretch of uncomfortable humidity here in Michigan. Now we are entering a new, more comfortable weather pattern. How long does it last? Let’s look. Be aware: Starting this winter, drivers following a snowplow too closely could face a $100 ticket. The new law makes it a civil infraction to drive any closer than 200 feet behind a snowplow that is actively salting, sanding, snow plowing or otherwise trying to remove snow and ice. |

Jim Harbaugh hit with 4-year show-cause penalty, suspension from NCAA |
An update: Two days after Jim Harbaugh made headlines for vehemently denying any knowledge or complicity in Michigan’s alleged sign-stealing operation, the 61-year-old was back in the news for an unrelated matter with the NCAA. Harbaugh was issued a four-year show-cause penalty and one-year suspension Wednesday by the NCAA over recruiting violations that occurred during a COVID-19 dead period in 2021. The good news for Michigan? Current head coach, Sherrone Moore, is not mentioned at all in the 48-page document issued by the NCAA. In the NFL: The Lions have been fined a whopping $200,000 by the league for their role in more than 15 fights and skirmishes during two practices with the New York Giants this week. The Giants were fined the same amount. |

Tiki bar boat rides are an actual thing on Michigan waters |
Climb aboard: There’s still plenty of summer left where you can actually take a ride on a Tiki bar boat on Michigan waters. Nick and Jody Blaszcyk launched Aloha Tiki Tours back in 2019 and have been helping people party on the water ever since. The Tiki bar boat tours are available in four places: Detroit, St. Clair Shores, Wyandotte and Port Huron. Mentioning another 313 special: Visitors to Detroit’s Belle Isle can get up close and personal with wildlife they might find in their own backyard at the island’s Nature Center. The Belle Isle Nature Center features a number of interactive exhibits designed to highlight the way that wild native species interact with manmade structures. On the west side: ArtPrize 2024 is scheduled for Sept. 13-28 in Grand Rapids, boasting 180 venues and over 1,600 artists. Before you go, know a new voting process is in store for the festivities this year. |
