Unconditional Basic Income Europe NEWSLETTER – June 2021 | Fighting for a more social Europe | A few weeks ago, Unconditional Basic Income Europe (UBIE) decided to join the coalition “Citizen Take Over Europe” (CTOE). In its consultation survey, the campaign wants to learn about your perspective on Europe, citizens’ participation, and the Conference on the Future of Europe. This survey is a great opportunity for you as a basic income supporter to provide your thoughts and opinions on how Europe should develop during the coming years. Your comments and ideas about how basic income should be applied within the EU will be shared with a continuously expanding group of civil society organisations within the CTOE alliance to promote a citizens-centred democracy. Please take a few minutes to fill in the questionnaire! The past month, UBIE also looked at the EU’s Social Summit in Porto – read more about our position on the EU’s Social Pillar Action Plan below. | Yours unconditionally, The UBIE Core Group: Antonios Triantafyllakis, Alessandra Bianchi, Ulrich Schachtschneider, Maria Quirimit and Dániel Fehér | EU Social Summit in Porto | On the first weekend of May, the Portuguese presidency of the EU Council organised a Social Summit in Porto. The summit focused on the European Commission’s Action Plan on the EU Pillar of Social Rights, encompassing issues like employment, social security, health care, lifelong learning, and workers’ rights. While UBIE welcomes the EU Commission going beyond symbolic declarations and different buzzwords in its Action Plan by setting measurable targets, we are sceptical of the lack of a more coherent approach for changes and reforms. For a sustainable recovery path from the pandemic that guarantees everyone’s economic security and human dignity, and in order to make society resilient against similar shocks in the future, we need a paradigm shift towards a social citizenship for all. The introduction of Unconditional Basic Income throughout the European Union could form such a base for a much needed guaranteed security for all.
